Mega Mix is amazing! The version I played was a few levels deep, then midway through a level you couldn't go any further. I've been meaning to check to see if there's a new version since then.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Chrono Trigger hacks yet!

Flames of Eternity and Prophet's Guile are both really good.

aww really? I'm hoping there's a "complete" version then. I'm never really into playing unfinished games.

How about a hack that makes The 7th Saga somewhat bearable. :lol:

I gave a link to RomHacking.net, as a blanket to ROM hacks. Lots of great hacks worth playing, too many to list.

Let me just clarify what I meant. By "levels" I didn't mean individual acts. I guess I should have called them "zones" like the Sonic games do. I was on the third or fourth zone and midway through a level I couldn't progress any further. I knew before hand that this was the case, being an unfinished game.

Still worth checking out tho, noise. Consider it a demo version. It's only a CD you have to burn, so not that big of deal. And perhaps more zones/acts are completed now. It was probably at least a year ago when I tried it.

Good point. Some hacks are complete overhauls that try to pretty much make an entirely new game. This is mostly what we think of when the topic comes up. But there's an equal amount of hacks that are just "fixes" instead of overhauls. I wont bother talking about re-translations, but there are plenty of them as well. But there's plenty of hacks for games that seem to be worth checking out. A lot of balancing and tweaking for RPGs, or bug fixes, etc.

Are you taking about the Genesis or Sega CD version? The Genesis version, AFAIK, is complete. The Sega CD version, however, is still a work in progress. Well, at least it was still being worked on when I tried it a year or so ago.

Nope. I haven't been for about a year now.

Sonic 1 (Genesis/MD):

* Sonic VR
* S Factor
* Metal Sonic Hyperdrive
* Sonic 1 Brother Trouble (unfinished, one zone finished w/ art for other zones finished; currently in limbo?)
* *character x* in Sonic 1 (Sally Acorn, Vector, and Amy Rose are my faves)
* Pana Der Hejhog (one-level only)

Sonic 2 (Genesis/MD)

* Amy Rose in Sonic 2
* Sonic Classic Heroes (actually merged from Sonic 1 and 2 & Sonic 2 Heroes)
* Sonic 2 Retro Remix
* Sonic 2 Secret Rings Edition

Super Mario Bros (NES/Famicom):

* Extra Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros 3 (NES/Famicom):

* Mario Adventure

Super Mario World (SNES/SFC):

* The Second Reality Project
* Brutal Mario

That's all I can think of for now. There's also a series of hacked versions of the GBA Pokemon games that replace the Pokemon with characters from the Touhou series.

Oh, wait!

* Pink Floyd's The Wall (graphics hack of Donkey Kong for NES)
* Mario's Fantasy Adventure (FF1 for NES)
* The Dark Knight (TDK-based hack of Batman for NES), but it's been WIP for years.
* Donkey Kong 2 (Nuts and Milk for NES)
* YT vid of various hacks, including DK2
