some bastard used my ebay account

Post by JC48573 »

spent hundreds of dollars on stuff and even listed an item I sold recently for a pretty high price. Anyone had this experience? Ebay took care of the problem on that day it happened, but I have to wait for my money to come back where I'm facing some ugly overdraft fees on the other line. What a bastard.

Sounds like a horrible experience. I hope I never have to experience something like this.
Any idea how they got your info?

I think it's inevitable. They either pick any random user or they have a grudge against you from a recent transaction.

Was your paypal password the same as your Ebay password? HUGE no-no.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

That sucks man. Was your password just a single word or something really easy? Try a combination of letters, numbers and symbols like 123four! At least you've gotten it sorted out for the most part.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

The combination doesn't matter that much. If it's a short password, it can still get dictionary'd easily. A long password of simple characters or words is better than a short password of gibberish. The only time I use a password that is fewer than 15 characters is on things I really don't care about.

Also make sure your eBay and Paypal aren't linked and go into your Paypal and disable any automatic payments, especially for shipping labels since shipping label fraud is a big thing right now. Often this stuff will get set up without you knowing it and it almost cost me a few hundred bucks a little while ago.

In my experience for any lost cash go to Paypal to file reports and contact them for help to get your money back. If you contact eBay they generally will just give you the run around and not do anything to help you. Within a week or two I had my money back in my account by dealing with Paypal people. Don't trust eBay to do it.

The eBay user community has been riled up for months now about a problem with eBay's security and Pitney Bowes, the firm in charge of it, since these kind of attacks started earlier this year and eBay has been in almost complete denial about it.

The best way to be completely secure is to not link a bank account or credit card to Paypal and only put money into it when you're going to use it. It's an extra step to take when you want to pay for something online but the inconvenience is worth the piece of mind.
