Atari 800xl ?
Atari 800xl ?
I just found an atari 800 xl in my parents storage, it is complete with disk drive and printer and controller etc.. I had never known about these.. A quick completed listing search on ebay and these seem to fetch a nice price. Anybody know more about this? Is it worth trading in or selling?
Re: Atari 800xl ?
I don't know how much they're actually worth, the completed listings that are over $50 seem to come with some extra stuff.
But I've always thought retro computers are cool and know there are others who think the same way. If you don't want it, you might as well sell it to someone who does?

Re: Atari 800xl ?
They are a blast to own. I have the Atari 600XL smaller version that originally came with less ram but has been expanded to the same amount. Has most of the games the Atari 2600 had but look and in some cases play better or are more complete like Donkey Kong which has all the levels. plus it has a awesome list of games that were not released on console such as rescue from fractalus. all Atari computer games up till 1991 when they quit making the 8-bit systems should work on it. I still do some programming on mine for fun. Here is a site that reviews the system and games.
PS XE was the recased version after the XL. http://videogamecritic.net/xeinfo.htm
originally the 8-bit computers where supposed to be console replacements for the Atari 2600. developed in 1979, all they did through the years was improve development software and added more ram, never changed the hardware or sound, not to bad. later they tried turning it back into a console with the Atari 5200 but we all know how that went.
sound. Atari XL cover of a Amiga Demo song. takes about 10 seconds to actually start.
for comparison here is the original Amiga song.

Do you know does that also apply to Atari XEGS? I'd like to own one of these but I have limited space so I cant collect a bunch of 8 bit Atari computers, I only have space (and money) for one 8 bit machine and an Atari STATARI800XLfan wrote:all Atari computer games up till 1991 when they quit making the 8-bit systems should work on it.

Yes, the XE Game System will play any regular Atari 8-bit computer games, as well as games that were specifically branded to the XE itself (which only some of the other machines, like the 130XE, can play).
Re: Atari 800xl ?
It depends. A couple of XEGS carts will run fine on any A8 with 16K and above, some only need 32K and some only need 64K. Most XEGS carts in my experience will run fine with at least 48K so you can play them on an original 800 no problem.driph wrote:as well as games that were specifically branded to the XE itself (which only some of the other machines, like the 130XE, can play).

Re: Atari 800xl ?
I have also always wondered in generally, which people think has the better sound chip. Atari 8-bit from 1979(pokey) or the Sega Master system 1986(Texas Instruments SN76489 (note that the Master System, Game Gear, and Mega Drive used a slightly altered clone of the newer SN76489A), what do you guys think
both are in game music.
Atari.
Sega.
