But our source says that Nintendo, which was always "difficult to work with," was uninterested in renewing that contract or in taking part in a number of digital initiatives that Future saw as necessary for the long-term health of the brand. He added that Nintendo doesn't seem interested in taking over direct control of the magazine again (Nintendo and Future representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this story).

Nintendo Power editors and staffers were told of the magazine's impending shuttering last week, the source said, and are currently being transitioned to work on other Future properties, including GamesRadar and MacLife magazine. The move should not affect Future's other gaming magazines, which include official periodicals for the PlayStation and Xbox brands, as well as Best Buy's @Gamer.

It's unclear exactly how many more issues of Nintendo Power are planned after the recently published August issue (its 281st), or how current subscribers will be compensated. Nintendo Power enjoys a total monthly readership of 475,000, according to Future press materials.

I know a number of folks here subscribe to this. I don't know what the quality has been like in recent years, but I used to love this mag as a kid when i could get a copy. Sad news.

There was a big shift when it stopped being done by Nintendo directly, and frankly I stopped reading it after that.

sad news indeed. Nintendo Power to this day is still decent in my opinion...probably the only current magazine I still enjoy reading from time to time...and i just renew my subscription two months ago. :?

Definitely sad.

Kinda makes me want to get into collecting old issues though.

What? This is so sad. I thought the magazine had been really good lately too. What the hell am I supposed to read now?

I guess this means I don't have to renew my subscription in October.......Not really a comforting thought :?

I've been wanting to get a subscription, but....

I guess I'll just collect some old issues. Pick up some Metroid covers or something.

This is kind of strange, they have almost half a million subscribers ... I can barely find it when I go to the store (it's ordered, they just always sell out) ... and yet ... they're saying it's not doing well enough?

And yet there's 170 different kinds of muscle, car, knife, and gun magazines sitting next to the three off-month carried game magazines. :\
