Best year for gamers ever?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Best year for gamers ever?

Post by gradualmeltdown »

My brain hurts from gaming options! The wide variety of well crafted games in the market right now is overwhelming! Heres what I've been into lately with the little time I have. What are you guys into this fall/winter?

360 :
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Puzzle Fighter Live
Virtua Fighter 5 Live
PGR 4

Wii

Mario Galaxy (best game in recent memory)
Metroid Prime 3
virtual console

DS
Contra 4
Bleech (treasure fighter)

Bleech DS is fantastic I just finished the story mode. Now I could watch any episode and maybe know whats going on. Treasure is pushing DS like crazy with massive sprite scaling and wikked character design!
I like old games
I like new games

Your list makes it seem like a weak year. I'm very disconnected from the current gen though, aside from PC, so I have a lower opinion than most. I'd take Mario , Contra, and Mass Effect, but thats it.

2000 was the best gaming year ever for me. Dreamcast games up the wazoo.

In my lifetime...

Best: 1996 (Saturn, Nintendo 64, and Playstation at hight of competition, Mario 64, NiGHTS)
Good: 2006 (Launch of Wii, E3 06 proves to be poison for Sony)
Bad: 2004 (lack of originallity in this year)
Worst: 2001 (Dreamcast cancelled, PS2 roars forward on generic FPS games and Spy games, leading to several years of a creativity vacuum)

So yeah, 1996-2000 Good, 2001-2006 Bad.

As a primarily PC gamer I'm still in love with the 1998/1999 greatness, but 2007 has been a good year for me too. I don't have much interest in the new consoles but even I would kinda like to take Mario Galaxy and Mass Effect (BioWare or not) for a ride. So far this year I've loved (and still loving) The Witcher, World in Conflict, Orange Box, BioShock, Culpa Innata, Overlord, etc. That friends of mine have lists very different from mine tells me that's it's been a year chock-full of something for just about everyone. Can't complain.

I agree with those picks.

2001 seriously was a depressing year for me. I honestly considered disconnecting from the industry. When DC died, I figured I didn't care about any other systems.
2004, very true. Gamecube was starting to dry up prematurely, which left me stranded again, and PS2 was still cranking out almost nothing that interested me, but the very next year it got a ton of gems.
1996, that was an exciting time. A lot of hype, but a few disappointments in the rocky transitions to 3D. I'd like to think that there was a better year in the early 90's but that's all a blur to me.

Hey another Mystical Ninja fan! Do you remember those epic button combos you had to do in order to kill the last boss when you were the robot? I can actuall tell you the day when gaming was at it's best; 9/9/1999.

I feel very frustrated that some people seem to get this idea that games are not as good as they once were or that games are getting worse. Its frustrating because this year has been fantastic for the industry, there has been a flood of AAA titles. If it wasn't for the delays with MGS4,GTA4 and other games then it'd be even better.

Personally I think that the quality of gaming hasn't changed much in the last 20 years. Its probably gotten a little better actually. If you compare the number of SNES and Genesis AAA titles in a year to the number of Xbox 360,PS3 and Wii titles. It definetly looks like the quality is stepping up.
