For each suprnova they take down a dozen more powerful rise up.

This is sort of the nature of things. One site will get knocked down, a replacement will come up, and so on.

I won't be impressed until we see someone big, say, ThePirateBay, go down.
Not that it would help things. Fighting piracy is a purely losing battle. You take some down, people get pissed, the make more effective and covert sites. Leave them alone? They escalate, just not as fast as they would if you bothered them.

Fighting piracy isn't a losing battle -- they're just not fighting it the right way. Layer after layer of draconian DRM, revoking ownership to content, and not allowing purchased content to be played freely where one wishes only makes piracy stronger.
The core principle of piracy that gets lost in these torrent sites (good riddance) is that it's not about getting stuff for free, it's about freedom for your stuff. As long as that principle needs to be fought for, piracy is going nowhere.

Out of the pirates I know, two do it for the reasons you suggest. The other ten or so do it to get stuff for free, and justify it by claiming DLC is on disk (in only one case I can think of were they actually right), that big companies don't deserve their money, and that "they should protect it better if they don't want people stealing it."irixith wrote:Fighting piracy isn't a losing battle -- they're just not fighting it the right way. They ruin it for those of us that pirate for the right reasons, or do things compeletely legitimately.
I've thought about pirating for MP3s of records I own, but I've always worried about viruses and such. Hmm.

I have one, but I haven't found a good program. It suggests Audacity, but my mom, (AKA One of the biggest IT people in her company) tells me not to use it. I just need something so I can listen to my music in the car.Opa Opa wrote:Get a USB turntable?Forlorn Drifter wrote:I've thought about pirating for MP3s of records I own, but I've always worried about viruses and such. I think Audacity works fine for what I use it for. It gets the music from the album, reduces some of the poping noise, and lets me split the file up into separate songs if I want. I also used it to edit some music from some Youtube videos of the Zelda Symphony. Now I can listen to Ballad of the Windfish as much as I want. Really, for a free program, it does everything and more that I ask of it.Forlorn Drifter wrote:...
