Firstly, I just burnt $60 on a Hori Mini Pad 64, and holy hell. It was god damn worth it. By far the best N64 controller in existence, and definitely the best joystick you could ever use on the console.

Another option is using an actual Gamecube controller. It would certainly solve the joystick problem, but there may be some button mapping annoyances with lack of C buttons.

The "Gamecube style" replacement joysticks are good solutions for platformers, and games like Bangai-O, but the overpowered sensitivity gets in the way of a lot of games.

There are OEM style replacement joysticks out now, but they break way too easily.

Can any aftermarket or game cube style joystick last a Mario Party 1 game. I stopped playing that game way back as it killed 3 controllers in a couple hours.

The two I ordered just came in. Man, these little bastards feel great! Gave both Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 a whirl, and boy do they play beautifully! Folks complaining about the sensitivity are probably just so used to their loose joysticks and forget how analogue controls feel like :)
REMEMBER TO CLEAN YOUR CONTROLLERS

That's what the hell I'm sayin'. I've never had a problem with them at all, even playing games like Goldeneye and such.
