slowly rebuilding my genesis collection

my mom recently moved, and found my old Genesis 3 and a few carts in the process. as a result, i've re-fallen in love with the genesis. i was a sega kid growing up and decided i wanted to relive my youth, so i'm going to start slowly rebuilding my genesis library (since i only had a few games to start with anyway). money is super tight for me so i set a limit for myself that i'm not going to spend any more than $5 on any game, unless it's a crazy-expensive game for a crazy-good price.

here's a list of the games i've decided to pick up. most of these games are games that i have a lot of fond memories playing, or they are games that i've heard about as an adult and have always wanted to check out. i'm going to update this thread as i acquire games, and i'll list the price i paid for them. my goal is to spend less than $400 total over the next 12 months (starting July 1st). that's ~$34 a month, or around a dollar a day (give or take a few cents). some of these games are going to be a real challenge to find within that budget, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

i've also decided to keep SHMUPS separate, since most of those games are a little pricier, and since it's my favorite genre, i think i'll probably display them separately as well.

the games i've crossed out were games that i already had in the box with the system, so i'm not counting them in the overall list.

let me know what you guys think! should i add any games that i've missed here? anything that i probably shouldn't pick up because it's terrible?

My list is pretty much the exact thing you posted.

I didn't have the Genesis growing up, but I used to play it at my neighbors down the street all the time. Now that I have one I've been on the lookout for cheap games all the time. I really want Castlevania + Contra.

That shmup list looks great, but it'll bring you into the $200-$400 just by itself. MUSHA is going to be a nice score if you can find it cheap. I have picked up a CIB Battle Squadron @ Play N Trade for $2.00 last year. That game is pretty weird. The enemies take FOREVER to kill. It's awesome how it was programmed by young kid, though (it was ported over from Amiga I believe).

yeah, i'm obviously hoping for an insane find with a lot of these :) but i've set my limits and i don't want to delve into crazy buy-it-now's just yet, so we'll see how far i can get within those parameters. i'm also just looking for cart-only, since i've got a neat idea on how to customize my collection once it gets sizeable. i've already got a couple "expensive" games so i think i have a decent start!

i also work at a place called The Exchange, and i have a big pile of CDs and DVDs that i don't want anymore, so i'll probably just nab a few of these titles with store credit. nothing like paying for junk with junk 8)

I could spend all day recommending Genesis games but I'll limit myself to some that are really worth checking out and aren't too expensive.

Rocket Knight Adventures is a must have. One of the best platformers of the era and considering it was an era where platformers were king that's saying a lot.

I really like Sub-Terrania because it's so unique but it's not for everybody.

Genesis has some of the best Disney games, at the very least Quackshot, Castle of Illusion and Aladdin are worth looking into.

The Shinobi games, they're all great but at the very least Shinobi III is one of the greatest action games ever made.

OutRun, not the best port ever but still a classic.

Wonder Boy in Monster World is another classic, a side scrolling action-adventure.

I'll stop there before I go too far. I really like the list you've got there, we have a really similar taste in games.

thanks! i decided to try and keep the list as small as possible, and really go after the games i remembered playing a lot as a kid, as well as some of the "classics" that i might have missed growing up, but read about in magazines. rocket knight adventures is a definite fit for what i've got going on here, so i'll add that to my search immediately :) i think once i get to the point where most of the games i'm looking for are in the mega-expensive range, then i'll start adding more titles en masse. thanks again for your recommendations!

in addition to RKA, i'm going to throw Maximum Carnage into the fray as well. forgot how much fun i had with that one. also Green Jelly!

That is quite an interesting list and i wish you luck in obtaining all those titles,i imagine some will be quite difficult to find and when you do i doubt they will be $5. Panic On Funkatron and Chakan are interesting titles but if i recall Funkatron has never been easy to get hold of even back in the day -at least not here in UK.

If you can find Mega Man: The Wily Wars and still keep within your budget, then my hat will be well and truly off to you.

But your list is indeed awesome - tons of great games there! As for other games you could add, lemme see...

Strider - The best port of the best arcade game - it's pretty much just great moment after moment. And it won't break the bank either - I'd call it a must have myself...just don't accidentally get Strider Returns, otherwise it'll all end in tears.

General Chaos - A real-time strategy game that works beautifully on a Sega...it's quick, great for multiplayer, rather humorous and just plain explosive fun. One of EA's best and most innovative titles.

Alien 3 - Very underrated side-scrolling shooter. A tough game, but you seem into that. Very atmospheric, the aliens actually feel like aliens...it has nothing whatsoever to do with the movie, but I might just call it the best tie-in game on the system, even over the likes of Aladdin.

Your shmup section is great and extensive, and it'll certainly prove a challenge to fill. I'd also say that you should look into Elemental Master - that's a very good shmup (sort of in the Commando style where you're walking on the ground) with some of the system's best music, although like most of the system's top shmups it'll set you back a pretty penny, barring a brilliant flea market find.

That's a nice list you've got there. I see a lot of overlapping with my own collection

I can confirm that Trouble Shooter is indeed a fun game, or at least I think it is.

And I'll second the recommendation for Sub-Terrania. It's fun, if a bit frustrating. I think I spent $4.99 for a complete copy of it at Play n' Trade, so that fits into your restrictions.

Hopefully you can find some really good deals at some thrift stores. That's where I've gotten the majority of my collection so far, and I've really only been actively adding to the system since the beginning of this year.

I feel bad for not mentioning Strider. It's one of the real classics on the Genesis and nearly an arcade-perfect port.

General Chaos is also great if you have some friends to play it with.

Surprised I didn't see OutRun. One of my favorite sega games ever, played it in Pizza Hut waiting for my food back in the day. 8)

Other games:
Forgotten Worlds (shmup)
Sunset Riders (kind of different than the arcade)
TMNT Hyperstone Heist

PS: I have a few of the items on your list when you start searching. :)
