I run IE9 on Windows 7 but a lot of websites detect me as using IE7 and give me error banners, etc.

How do you fix this besides using FireFox?

IE runs like shit period, but especially in Windows 7, there are many issues. If you gave us what specific errors you're getting that would help.

Firefox won't even install - it asks for which clearance (I don't have an admin setup - it's a blank password which isn't allowed), I select my regular laptop user setup and the install just disappears and does nothing.

I think I may need to clear out my cache or something

This is the IE error I get.

Okay so it sounds like you're having issues with Windows 7 admin stuff but your explanation is a little unclear... So the account you're using isn't the administrator? Have you tried right clicking on the firefox install application and running as administrator? That should work as doing that doesn't require a password.

As for the IE error that's weird. I would try clearing out the cache, then update if need be. Really though you should try to get Firefox or Chrome installed.

Google search to the rescue! This was literally the first result in my google search. Does your google search also not work in IE9?

Here is the answer.

Step 1:
a. Open internet explorer.
b. Click on Alt key on the keyboard. Now click on Tools in menu bar.
c. Select Compatibility View Settings.
d. Remove the check mark for Display all websites in Compatibility View and close the Compatibility View Settings window.

If that doesn't fix it, reset IE settings using this link:

The best way of solving any and all issues with IE is to get a real browser.

Many websites are actually coded poorly. Instead of checking if your version is high enough they check if your version is one of a a few specific ones on their list. This becomes pretty obvious when I browse at work, since I use IE 10 there (since that's what's on Windows 8 builds) and sites complain that my IE version isn't high enough.

Thank you. I had googled a bit but wasn't using the right search items. It was a compatability view issue with two main sites (espn, CBS sportsline).

This is confusing, are you the Admin or owner of the computer? A rogue Spyware might be locking you out from installing Firefox. Spyware programs such as McAfee, Norton and even built in Windows Defender could also be causing problems. I really hate Win7 Firewall pestering every install, I disabled all that crap and use Spybots Search and Destroy.

Use Google Chrome. Problem solved.
