That would be great! I have been considering getting one of the new SCPH-79000 models for all of my PS2 import games (which won't play on my US PS3), but might wait awhile for this one to come out in Japan as well.

If it gets any more compact, we'll lose the damn thing.
ImportBoy, before you do that, let me show you this

So basically, if you want a slim, go with SCPH-700xx. The later ones are worse. Sony used faultier power transformers, cd lenses, and combined the cpu and gpu which hurt overall compatibility. And yet through all this, they didn't drop the price. Knowing Sony, this next version will be worse, if it's true.

Believe it or not, the newest ps2 slims are 300 grams lighter than the older ones. the older ones are 900 grams and the newest ones are 600 grams.
thats a pretty dramatic 1/3rd drop.
says so in the wiki, but this post is coming from my memory of reading about it so if i made a mistake sorry, but im pretty sure im right.

That sucks the newer ones are worse - you'd think Sony would know how to produce the PS2 after...what 7 years?

As if 300 grams means anything to your furniture holding the PS2. I don't think it minds a little more weight when its holding your television that weighs 70x more. Seriously, gimping a console to make it slightly lighter makes no sense to me.

Where have you been? I have I think six, maybe seven PS2 controllers, and all of them are broken, usually in the shoulder button/anolog stick department. Sony is still using the same unreliable design since 2000, and the price still stays at $25.00! Still, I see no reason for Sony to get even more compact with the PS2. I have two of the original design, and they have never frozen, overheated, or had a power supply faliure. Sure, I'm one of those guys who take extra good care of his gaming stuff, but still I think the models have been worse and worse since launch.

I imported a white SCPH-79000 a couple months ago to play my imports, and have not had any problems with compatibility. The amount of games reported incompatible is so low it shouldn't pose much of a problem to most people.
And based on that report for the new, even more compact design, it already sounds flawed and I wouldn't recommend it. The fact that they are putting the power supply back into the case is NOT a good design move. It was removed for a reason: it produces heat, which can warp other components inside.

Yes, but keep in mind that not every game was tested for compatbility (there are thousands of games across the regions), and also that even if games are discovered incompatible, it isn't always reported. I wouldn't be surprised if the accurate list was 3 or 4 times larger. I mean, fusing a CPU and a GPU is a massive operation.

I think in Europe they would be worth getting if someone doesnt have a PS2, as although Ive seen my friends PS3 running PS2 games and it seemed ok, I would MUCH prefer to know it was running in hardware and not soft emulation...
