Is The GP2X F-200 Worth Buying?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Is The GP2X F-200 Worth Buying?

Post by abeisgreat »

Well it was just released. And i really want one. I wanted the original but never got it. Do you think getting the F-200s worth the money?

Depends a lot on how much you will actually use it, and how much money to spare you have :)
If you have no handheld yet, you should get one handheld for sure. I regret only getting one in 2003/2004. I should have got the original GB back in the old days...

After having come to that decisions (of buying a handheld) it is a question of deciding which one.

1. You can buy an old one very cheap (the GBA is very good for retro gamers, IMO) - so you might even buy more than one (GBA + NGPC for example).

2. You can go get the open source GP2X which will absolutely let you have LOADS of gaming from the old days through emulation (I'm not wanting to discuss ethics here, we all know that there are differing views on this); there are also homebrew games there - but naturally no "modern" AAA titles from Nintendo or anything like that.

3. You can go and get a DS / PSP.

Which one is best and most worth the (different) amount of money depends a lot on what usage and fun you will get of each one.

I wouldn't pay much more for the new touch-screen one over the regular GP2X as the only stuff that would support it is the menu system and any homebrew games.

Although touch features are bound to become more frequent in homebrew games. See Rose Camellia, the flash game, and also this sheep rolling one from Jay is games competition. These are mouse controlled games in PC, but they could get ported easily.

Google Rose Camellia (by Nigoro)

Speaking of which, I should check out the winners of the competition. Maybe there's more of that sort

Worth buying?
Hmm, I got a GP32 and enjoyed it very much, but in my oppinion it lacked commercial games. Of course there were a lot of homebrew games, but it's been quite often that I felt like being a beta tester finding bugs again and again. On the GP2x there are even less commercial games. If it were equipped with a 3d grafix chip, I wouldn't have hesitated a second to buy me one.
I've just had a quick look at the price and to be honest, 170,- Euro is not worth it. Aren't there any price reductions for the GP2x, like for the PSP or NDS? Also, I remember the homebrew scene for GBA has been really huge and for 170,- Euro, you can get a lot of GBA stuff. You can even play NFS on that unit!
That's the main reason for me: I would only buy a handheld for which I can get some good quality (commercial) racing games.
