Is Battletoads fun?

I understand that the game has great music and graphics, and the fighting aspect is enjoyable, but is the game fun overall?

I went into this game expecting a beat-em-up similar to Double Dragon. It is not that at all. The enemies are sparse and easily defeated. Any time you die in this game, it is due to the environment, and not an enemy.

I'm trying to have fun with this, but the first few levels were easy even during my very first play of the game. So, I am on auto-pilot for the first two levels and 90% of the third level, then I spend all of my lives just trying to get through literally the last 10 seconds of the level. I will undoubtedly conquer this section soon, but every play of this game will be "how few times can I die on the hover bike stage".

The game appears to be relatively long. If this is what the rest of the game is like, then I don't know if I will bother.

I feel that it is too long for what it is, like you said, most of my deaths were from environment not baddies. It always got alot of love because of its difficulty.

I prefer Battletoads Double Dragon myself.

I couldn't imagine getting through the game with a teammate. Having both players able to successfully navigate all of these environmental hazards would require a miracle.

It's worse than that. The other player becomes a hazard of it's own because friendly fire is on!

There's reason to believe the 2 player mode was not playtested at all. A bug makes beating the hover bike stage impossible for the second player, making the whole thing kind of moot.

Anyways, from what I have been told, the difficulty curve is vertical. It has an early spike and then assumes you have mastered the previous stage before being able to get close to beating the current one.

The frustration of trying to beat the game with 2 players is what has made the Battletoads games so legendary. It's part of the fun for me. The games in general aren't anything special and can be cleared fairly easily with one player, but adding that second player just makes everything so much more entertaining.

I think that Battletoads is immensely fun and challenging, but - as I wrote in another thread - it would be improved immeasurably by a password feature.

I think Battletoads is fun. I'm a bit of a masochist.

From what you've posted, this probably isn't a game for you to stick with though. If you didn't think the first three levels were awesome then it's not really going to get much better for you.

I think bruno sums it up. It is hilariously awesome with a friend, one of my friends and I somehow beat it back in jr. high once...

Just wait until the Rat Race level (stage 10 or something?), my friend and I went fucking bonkers during that level and I haven't forgotten it since. One of the scariest levels ever.
