How to get a free website?
I'm thinking I'd like to make a website of my own sometime in the future (not right now), but I don't want to pay for it. Does anyone know of a good, free place to do this? Geocities is the first thing that comes to mind, but they're gone.

You can run it on your own computer, if you're willing to leave your computer on all the time. There are free DNS services that will let you give people a permanent URL, so you can run a website for no investment of money (aside from your electric bill).

That would work, if I didn't have an upload cap of something like 125 megabytes per day. Also, my internet service is incredibly unreliable. Goes out whenever I get a thunderstorm, heavy rain, snow, hail, or if it's just too dang sunny and clear.MrPopo wrote:You can run it on your own computer, if you're willing to leave your computer on all the time. Wouldn't running a public facing site from your own computer be a bit risky, as well?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Not really any more risky than posting on a forum that records your IP address.Flake wrote:Wouldn't running a public facing site from your own computer be a bit risky, as well?

Thought for sure this was a spam thread with that title.

Yeah but for that you can just use something like Overplay or any other IP obfuscation service. If you are hosting a site directly from your own computer, don't you run the risk of someone breaking your site getting access to your machine?MrPopo wrote:Not really any more risky than posting on a forum that records your IP address.Flake wrote:Wouldn't running a public facing site from your own computer be a bit risky, as well?
And that is a serious question - my computer knowledge is kinda low.

Blogger, Tumblr or Wordpress free sites are an option. All three have had some great strides in making them look less standard blog like.
The cheapest almost free way is to pay the small fee to register a url for one or two years at something like GoDaddy that offers on occasion a free server that can be activated with the purchase. Most of the time when they offer that you'll have to do all the set up for your databases and installs (for like Wordpress or Dot Net Nuke) on your own though.
I'm running on a free server for http://kevinwillingham.com right now.

I forgot about Tumblr, I could try that. If I do make the site, it would mainly be for me to post reviews of games and movies I'd watched/played, and to post comics I've made.KDub wrote:Blogger, Tumblr or Wordpress free sites are an option. If you don't mind a subdomain, you can go through Host My Heart's Admire package. If you want a domain, you can spend 10 bucks to get one and move up to their Crush package whichgives you more storage and bandwidth.
