Playing Perfect Dark for The 64

I am currently playing Perfect Dark for the 64, I dont recall how FPS were in the 2000's but this one is truly great for a console that was released in '96. The graphics are amazing to me (although the human models look funny by today's standard, not sure if back then it was "WOW ITS SO REAL" thing) .

I have 2 questions:
1) This game is screaming for a map system. Its either I couldnt find it in the menu , or it is supposed to be without maps to give you the spy feelings where you have to sneak into buildings. But again, if you are a spy shouldn't obtaining maps of buildings be the easiest part of your job? I played up to the 2nd level and feels a little bit lost(no where near Turok haha)

2)Does this game uses a controller pak? For what? I am using none and the game seems to be automatically saved

I don't ever remember seeing a map in it. For your second question, I can't answer because I originally played it with emulation.

Memory card was for saving character data, single player and multiplayer

You didn't have to use it, it was basically so you could bring your multiplayer data and stats/unlocked levels and cheats over to a friend's house.

The game saves to the cart

There isn't a full map I believe, like one you can open and look at. But there is the small blip map in the top corner and an IR tracker. Information can be displayed about where you are going on that.You can also use goggles to look through walls and get a kind of map layout of the adjacent rooms.

But a full map for this game really isn't required.

Exploring the levels to find stuff you need to use for the higher difficulties is half the fun, I'm glad there's no map. Speaking of which, try even the first mission on Perfect Agent. If you "dont recall how FPS were in the 2000's", you'll be pleasantly surprised, as well as angered at how linear modern campaigns are.

I don't know man, Perfect Dark seems a little more maze-like than Turok to me. I guess I'd rather explore vast open regions than several small corridors. Either way it's pretty easy to get lost but you eventually get the feel of where you are since you're just going around in circles for a while. Anyway, I just recently bought Perfect Dark again because I wanted to give it another chance and I just still can't really get into it. It might have something to do with Goldeneye being the first FPS that I ever actually liked (and probably the first I played for that matter) so I end up comparing everything to that game. But I even really enjoyed The World is Not Enough which a lot of people say isn't as good as Goldeneye. This has kind of turned into a rant, sorry about that. haha But anyway, I like discussions about N64 games, there should be more of these. Well, really all you did was ask questions but still. haha

If you compare everything to Goldeneye, then PD is about as close as you're going to get.
