Wasn't replacing the drive with one that didn't have a plastic sled the fix? Or were there other issues besides that causing focus issues and making the system re-read which in turn made videos skip?

take the laser assembly apart, clean and regrease sled and gears. Adjust laser pot to 850, clean laser and laser mirror.
After you done that, retail games should work with not FMV issue, but backups will still have FMV issues

So a 5, 7 or 9 series drive? Maybe the 5 is the closest type.

Is there a step by step tutorial for this?

The PSone SCPH-101 Laser Assembly will fit perfectly in the SCPH-1001 as long as you switch the White Deck with the Black Deck

picked up a psone, it will spin but it doesn't read games. i put the 1001 laser assembly in and still no reading.
i switched the plastic lids of the assemblies but now the new assembly in the old psx doesn't spin.
