I guess I'm just a retro gamer

Post by mas »

First let me just say merry christmas to all. I was playing the ps3 and super street fighter 4 arcade edition. Grant it it's a great game but Then I see the snes and I found myself having more fun with just street fighter 2 turbo than sf4. I think sf4 is great but I just found myself having more fun with street fighter 2 turbo.
I just have been playing the snes all day so far. Street fighter, f-zero, batman returns, donkey kong country, super punch out,and the mario all stars and mario world. I try so hard to get into current gen systems but i just can't. Well I guess I love cartridge base systems. Well now my nes is missing me time to play punch out, zelda and ninja gaiden. Merry christmas

It happens, especially in our relative age group, the late 20's - early 30's types. There is this cognitive jump that we just never made.

Noise said it best a couple years ago when he declared that there wasn't a single IP created after 1999 that he enjoyed. A surprising number of people (myself included) realized that applied to us as well.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yep that's what is going on with me. I'm 35 and grew up on nes, sms, genesis, and snes. By the time n64/ps1/sat came out I was thinking more about girls and working full time. I did get involved in the 5th and 6th generation consoles, but even then I got back into what I know and loved as a child in the 80's and a teen in the 90's

Pretty much my story. Was the quintessential Nintendo fan boy despising everything SEGA until I got my Dreamcast in 2001

Of course my retro roots run deep with my Atari 7800 Pro System, NES, and SNES. By the time 5th gen was out I was working and just reading up about how cool the DC was :) Got that and don't really give much attention to anything else 6th or current gen now -- When I got the DC I figured that when the newest gen comes out everything else gets cheaper and it's all so much fun to collect -- been doing that for 10 years with my Dreamcast -- looking for the best accessories, constantly fitting around 50 games on 4 VMUs with all the colors in the rainbow, and getting the most out of it with the best and rarest in games for it :D I live breathe and bleed ORANGE!

This all pretty much applies to me as well. I'd rather play games on the Master System, NES, TG16, Genesis or SNES than almost any other platform. I do occasionally enjoy a modern 3D game like the Batman Arkham games, or Golden Axe Beast Rider, but overall I don't see any newer IP as endearing as games from before the 3D holocaust.

I'd say it's safe to say it happens with humans in general, just that gaming is a relatively young medium. Look at the typical music/movie preferences of your parents, grandparents, and so on. You're turning into a modern version of your parents that only listen to the oldies station because "music was better then"
Not to be insulting or anything. We all do it, to one degree or another, despite our best intentions to stay objective. My point is more that gaming tastes are nothing special in that regard. Just probably something new enough that we didn't see it as much in our own parents.

I actually see younger gamers today having less of an attachment to their games than we did. I think it is in part because of the amazing amount of choice they have (so many games at such a relatively low price!) and this culture of getting to the next level of graphics, gameplay, whatever.

Suffice to say, while I see us playing Donkey Kong Country for decades to come, I don't see a teenage gamer enjoying Modern Warfare 3 today plugging away at it in the years to come in spite of the inevitable sequels.

Color me like you, mas. NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy - those were the good days! I can have fun with my modern systems, but I never grow tired of the 8 and 16 bit generation, but especially the 16 bit generation, or arcade games! Galaga, Pole Position, Centipede, love them all!

That's what happened to me. I saw the dreamcast and yes I bought the games because it has the games that I loved inthae arcades. But I just went back to the systems I love. I do own a ps3 and wii but the kids play that mostly. I own the original xbox and the only reason why I have that because of the roms I own on the system, other than that I don't care for that system either. Hell I am playing more of the actual hardware than the nes/snes/gen roms thanks to you guys. The only time I play with the rom's is to try out a game before I buy it.

I think this is really a subjective thing. The values you place on those titles are being ascribed to kids that likely seen them quite differently. I hold a special place for DKC too, and don't really give two shits about any CoD titles, but I'm also 31, not 13. I remember getting the preview video for DKC in the mail and watching it with my friends. I remember us all playing it that Christmas season, buying the soundtrack... Kids now have their own titles they're experiencing like that, and will value beyond their "face value" as a result.
