So what did everyone think of Superman Doomsday?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

So what did everyone think of Superman Doomsday?

Post by Gamerforlife »

I quite enjoyed it for it what it was, a straight to DVD Superman animated movie. I hear a lot of people disliked it because it wasn't true to the comic. How exactly can you be true to a comic book storyline that was something like two years long with a straight to DVD movie? You can't. I hear people saying that it should have been split up in multiple volumes. Riiiiight, like Bruce Timm can just tell that to Warner and they'll be like, "Oh yeah sure, go ahead". It's unlikely they would even consider making a follow up until AFTER seeing how the DVD sells so it makes sense that Bruce Timm and co did the whole story in one release.

I thought the voice acting was great. I don't care what anyone says, Ann Heche was superb as Lois. Her scene with Martha Kent was a tear jerker and the best scene in the movie. This is probably the best portrayal of Lois I've ever seen outside of comic books. Lois has always been an annoying character in just about every movie and tv show I've seen her in, but in this movie she's actually very sweet and likeable, while still retaining some of that attitude she is well known for.

Lex was great too. I'm a James Marsters fan from back on Buffy. He does the character well. I love the death of Mercy. It was shocking, but made sense. Would you want to be connected to the death of the world's greatest hero? Of course he's going to tie up EVERY loose end that could connect him to it. Not like Lex has any regard for human life anyway, why would he feel any different towards her?

Of course, the action was good. That's stating the obvious.

I didn't have any problems with the animation. I don't know why so many are complaining about the lines on Superman's face. It's such a minor thing and just shows how obsessive and over analytical fanboys can be.

My only minor complaint is I would have liked the movie to linger on this death a bit more, but I know there were time constraints and pacing issues there. Again, this is just a straight to DVD movie, not a three hour long threatrical affair like your typical Peter Jackon movie. They hit the most important notes: Lois and Martha's grief, Jimmy losing his moral compass, Lex's anger at losing his greatest rival, and the news broadcast showing the world's grief over Superman's death. And for everyone complaining about not seeing other superheroes react to Superman's death. Duh, this is a Superman movie not a Justice League episode. There are no other super heroes in this movie's universe, at least not on earth. If you want that, there is an excellent Justice League episode where Superman supposedly dies and they did a GREAT job of showing Batman and the Justice League's sense of loss. But again, this isn't Justice League. The movie isn't even in that continuity.

So many of the complaints I hear for this movie are utterly ridiculous. Everyone wishes they had included all of the fake Supermen. Oh yeah, that's brilliant. Because we all remember how great Spiderman 3 turned out when they tried to cram too many characters into it.

Thoughts? Anyone else enjoy it, or did everyone but me hate it?

I wanted to get it but they were gone at Target yesterday. Hopefully I'll see it during the week and get it later when it's cheaper

Hope you didn't read my whole post. There's some spoilers. It's actually available on demand for four bucks. I watched it that way first, then bought the DVD once my paycheck was in the bank.

I like the movie, but it seems to be polarizing people, kind of like Superman Returns did, which I also liked(though I'm pissed at Singer for ditching X-Men before finishing the trilogy). So I'd say watch it first on Demand if you can. The DVD is pretty sweet though. The commentary on the DVD is great to listen to as most commentaries involving Bruce Timm tend to be. There's also a great one hour documentary detailing the creation of the whole death and return of Superman story from the comics. Overall, a good buy in my personal opinion.

I bought it the other day and watched the first half. I'm enjoying it so far. For the sake of nitpicking, I'll say the cheekbones are a little crazy and I would have liked to see Doomsday in that suit he wore in the comics. The gradual reveal was pretty cool.

I grew up a Marvel Zombie but I was about 14 or so when the death storyline was happening and my friends and I couldn't help getting swept up in the hype. Dan Jurgens came to our comic shop (The College of Comic Book Knowledge in Minneapolis) and we got every variation of the issue signed. Good times.

On a side note, I just got a 46" Samsung LCD and I must say, animated movies look really good upscaled to 1080p.
