from what i can tell from that pic, it seems that your PS is missing the three little metal bearings that come in the center.

Thats where that clicking sound comes from.

PS1 are very common now and I'm sure that you can get a base console for less than 10 bucks. And thats pushing it, cause PS1's are super cheap.

Go get another playstation.

The spindle is like a $1 part, if that's all that's wrong with it.

Here is a direct pic of your link for a quicker look. Gaaaah I hate clicking a bloated photo sharing link just to see a pic.

As others pointed out it looks like the disc holder might be bad, missing the clips. However, if there is enough stem left to hold the disc solid this is not really a problem. Good idea to change once you get a replacement, but sometimes a pain to remove.

The scratch sound in the grey PS1 is probably the tracking motor. Are you using Pressed Discs or CDRs? Sometimes as a console wears it has problems reading discs, the CDRs make the Laser work harder to track. You just might need to clean the Laser Eye and also clean and polish the Discs.

Look under Guides in the Board Index, some of this is already covered there :?

The ball bearings are held out by a rubber band. If the bearings are gone, then the disc just sits loose on the spindle and when it tries to spin it will peel out while the disc mostly slips. That's the noise you're hearing. As mentioned, a replacement hub is cheap.
