The free and open internet is saved! (for now)

Post by J T »

The senate voted in favor of net neutrality!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

It was a 52-46 vote, so kind of a close call.

Story:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/1 ... 86530.html

If you haven't been following the net neutrality debate, it basically concerns whether we all have unsrestricted access to the internet where all sites are treated equally in their access to bandwidth. If net neutrality had been voted down, ISPs would have control to block programs and content, impose payment structures on customers for varying levels of speed and bandwidth allottment, give higher priority internet access to sites that generate them more revenue and squeeze out sites that don't. Basically, the big wild and wooly internet where you have access to just about anything would be lost to the control of ISPs.

So I am very excited that net neutrality won this round! (WOOT!) :D

If you want to see how your senator voted, you can find the record here.

I have a feeling that those that voted Yes don't use the internet save for News and email.

I mean, it was such a terrible idea. For example, since I have Comcast internet and they serve cable, they could keep me from going to Netflix and Hulu so I have to buy their cable. It's nuts!

I suspect very few Senators actually use any technology. They have staffs for that. I think the real reason for the no votes is a near religious belief that everything the private sector does is good, and everything the government does is bad. If it was just down to individual understanding of the technology, I don't think you'd see the party line split you do. I doubt any of them actually considered the actual effects of this bill, only how it would affect their standing in their party.

The voting went along party lines, with the Republicans voting for it and the Democrats against. Inouye (D-HI) and McCain (R-AZ) didn't vote, and Lieberman (I-CT) and Sanders (I-VT) voted with the Dems.
