It's time for someone to do Genesis Emulators for Sega CD !!

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

It's time for someone to do Genesis Emulators for Sega CD !!

Post by claudio »

So does it exist? Is it possible? Can someone finally make genesis emulators that run on a sega cd system?

If someone already knows how to do this let me know, if not, lets find a way to convince some programmers to do so.

I want to get rid of my cartridges.

Sega did it with their classics 5 in 1 disc (also 4 in 1), now lets see someone make a "all in 1."

Actually if there is a way to make 1 genesis game per cd i think that would be great also.

The best part about this is that it should be perfect framerate.

We would need to utilize the internal memory for game saves which would be the trickiest part but they did do it on dreamcast for the VMU.

Lets do it, this is my next dream come true!!

Whats the point? If you own a Sega CD, chances are it's connected to a Genesis already. I don't get what you're driving at here.

claudio said he wanted to get rid of his carts. Anyhow, isn't there DC EMU disc with Genesis ROMs? I bet most of use have a working DC over Sega CD units.

And whats the point to that? You've got the real games, but you'd rather play them by fake, inferior means. I don't get it.

I don't think the Genesis has the power to emulate itself....

It would not be really an emulator but a way to read roms from the CD, so it's more or less a rom loader, i guess it's possible. The Mighty Missile games was done for MD and runs on MCD with few changes, Is there MD/MCD dev. here to answer ?

Well there is the Sega Classic collection that came with the SCD, but maybe they were just ports. With enough coding, you could probably come up with a simple VM that allows access to the Genesis hardware and run ROMs, but most people aren't gonna bother. I have quite a few Genesis carts, but I don't really play the Genesis itself, I have a HTPC that does it all.

Yeah, that would be the best approach, but considering this has been something people have been looking into for a decade, I'd be surprised if it ever happens.

But nothing is impossible. But somebody is REALLY gonna have to get to know the hardware really well to pull it off. I'm not sure if there are any developers out there that are dedicated to the Genesis.

I don't know how compatible (if at all) the Sega CD's graphics chip is compared to the Genesis'. If it's identical, it should be really easy to get the games running using the (faster) SCD processor. Sound would be a bitch though.

Still, all of this would have to be coded in Assembly or BEASTLY C, and there aren't too many Genesis game coders around anymore (looks at Tavern RPG, and that's about it).

Just get a Mini ITX PC or a modded Xbox. Much easier, plus you get better picture quality (up to 480p\720p if you've got a HDTV), sound quality (stereo sound, overdrive, SPDIF connection) and on a PC, a wireless controller (Bluetooth + PS3 controller = :D ). Never mind the speed of loading games, having other systems in one place and keeping the originals nice and safe.

I dont like the genesis emulators for dreamcast. They dont seem to run perfect, the lag time is different and frame rate suffers a little. Some games work better than others.

This is more like running a rom reader (as vbt mentioned) off the sega cd, not really a emulator. Sega genesis games run best off the original hardware, so all we need is for the roms to be read off the cd and trick the system into thinking its just a cartridge.

I dont think you would need to run off the sega cd graphix chip. Remember that there already is a way to even run off the 32x chips (sega cd 32x games) so im sure there is a way to run off the genesis chips, which im certain that some sega cd games already do.e

Why do this? Lets look into the advantages i thought of. Feel free to add to this.

1. Some people love to play the games off the original equipment like me. (i play my playsation 1 games only and a ps1, NOT a ps2 for example)
2. We can get rid of out carts and save alot of space.
3. We can appreciate our Sega CD system more than ever (like me)
4. No worrying about losing our game saves on a cartridge (since we will save on the system and then make a backup on a sega cd memory cart)
5. Portability. Nothing like bringing my Sega CDX (with my 32x attached) and having a disc of genesis games (32x games on the disc as well would be nice) already inside my CDX. Perfect for taking to friends house without bringing a box of cartridges.
6. This may help stimulate homebrew development for the Sega CD. Once this project is started, info can be shared and help stimulate the whole Sega CD homebrew scene.
7. It's just simply plain freaking cool, im sure that most everybody could agree.
8. We would be playing our Genesis games with our original 6 button genesis controllers as well. Besides imperfect emulation issues with the dreamcast, the controllers just dont seem right for those games.
9. Forget the emulators on PC's with better definition and quicker load times. I want my genesis games to be original the way it looks on a genesis. My cdx is much more portable than a xbox, plus i hate playing genesis games on a xbox or PC controller. Yeah i know you can rig stuff up, but i simply want all this to run on original equipment.
