Is there an RPG for me?

Is there an RPG for me?

Post by halosoul »

Hi, I've not written on here for a while but I have a burning desire to ask a question...

I'm quite interested in getting an RPG game for the PS2. As you can probably tell by that statement I'm not really big into RPG's and have had some less than enjoyable experiences with them in the past.

I'm after an RPG that doesn't make me sit through loads of long cut scenes or lots of talking and has more to it than walking from place to place having lots of random battles. Also are there any RPG's out there that don't take themselves too seriously and have a good sense of humour?

In short I'm after something with lots of varied gameplay, a simple but effective battle system, a sense of humour, interesting characters and an emotive storyline which you can really get involved in

Any one know of an RPG like this?

BTW the only RPG I've really ever got into is Pokemon...

Disgaea or the other similar titles might be up your alley, but not mine. It felt like every possible "tactics" gameplay mechanic was thrown in without any balance. Breath of Fire 5 might be for you, but I only saw 30 minutes worth to form that opinion. Its the old ball in the series, and does some unique stuff.

Cheers. I've heard a lot of good things about Disgaea, may give it a look, as long as it's not too complicated :?
I shall investigate this Breath of Fire further, I think I've played the first on the Super Nintendo, if I remember corerctly you can avoid battles which is always good :)

Thanks for the pointers

Look for Valkyrie Profile 2 as well. If it's anything like the first, it's an extremely unique RPG. My favorite aspect to the first was how you had to witness the tragic story and death of all of your party members before they are able to join you.

I thought Disgaea first too. Although its meant to be quite complex. Others I would say are Grandia 1/2.

If you had a Wii I would have said Paper Mario.

EDIT

OH! How could I forget about Okami?! Great Zelda style game with great graphics and a sense of humour!

I started RPGs with Pokemon too. I think my next one was Golden Sun on the GBA

For beginner stuff, you probably want Nintendo consoles.
Examples:
Earthbound (SNES)
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Paper Mario (N64)
Paper Mario TYD: (Gamecube)

Hey Halosoul,

I hear ya. I used to love RPGs but I've gotten a bit burned out on them. I know it's not PS2 but Chrono Trigger is still a classic. It's cliche to say but Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I never had a SNES as a kid but on a few occasions I took my hard earned bucks to rent a SNES and Link to the Past or Chrono Trigger to play.

Frankly I'd just look for action/adventure games that have some plot. Something like Okami.

I've never played it but I'm intrigued by Dark Cloud 2. I'm just throwing it out there.

I've heard that Dragon Quest VIII is a quality traditional RPG.

Both Lunar games on PS1 amused me greatly. Plot wasn't too heavy, lots of jokes worked into the translation. Battle system isn't too hard. Characters have specific roles and you don't have a huge group of them to keep track of.

If you want less talk and more rock you could try hack and slash games like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.

This post was barely coherent. If any of it was helpful to you - great. If not, banish it from your mind.

Thanks for all the suggestions :D Got a good few ideas to be going on now. For the moment I think I'll start playing Okami again. I started it but not long after I got God of War and a couple of others and stopped playing it. By the sound of it, I think it's probably the kind of game I'm looking for at the moment.

Thanks again

Let us know what you thought of the game when you finish it!

You'll probably like Beyond Good and Evil if you like Okami, and Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is a fun and gory action game for you if you like God of War.

I think action rpg may be more your thing than traditional rpgs. Unless you hate all things Disney, you might want to rent Kingdom Hearts II. It's very easy to get into. It is a bit cutscene heavy though, but the combat system is easy to learn, fun and has some variety to it. It's a straightforward game that doesn't make you waste too much time wandering around or talking to fifty people. It's one of the simpler rpgs to get into and doesn't get too complex or boring. You don't really have to play the first one to play KH II. The main plotline really doesn't make any sense anyway, I just enjoyed reliving many classic Disney movies throughout each of the game's worlds without any real care for the nonsensical main plotline.
