What do YOU want to see in the ideal game store?

Post by jay_red »

So for a while now, my Fiance' and I have kicked around the idea of how cool it would be to open up a game store, one that we as gamers would want to go to, since there is nothing that great in our area.

This is quickly becoming more than just "what if" talk, and we are serious about getting a business plan together, and looking into it legitimately after we get married next year.

We have a TON of ideas of things we would do, how it would be set up, and the kind of events we would host. We want to get some feedback and input from some of the people that I would trust the most with retro gaming... you fine folks here!

I would like to hear what you guys would want in your local game store. Please throw out any and all ideas (and dont mind if I like a few and decide to make note of them ;) )

haha I hear that! One of my biggest problems with the few local stores are the serious price gouging. Good prices would be a must!

Agreed on prices. I'm sick of price-gouging too. I'm not entirely sure though if it's feasible for a trade-in store to regularly give good prices.

In order to get a good inventory going, you've got to offer decent trade-in prices. The more you pay for trade-ins, the more you're gonna have to charge the end consumer. And that's not even considering overhead like rent, utilities, and labor.

We would be very serious about good condition games, and even adjust the trade in/sell price accordingly (no full price for torn labels or incomplete disc games) We have even thrown out the idea of not taking old sports games at all, since all they would do is take up shelf space, with no hope of ever selling.

Yeah, it won't be easy, but as I see it, if I could get a CIB game at a game store for the same price as I would online including shipping, I'm going with the game story. So basically a trade-in to the store would be something like this formula:

Price of game sold on ebay = x
Price of shipping = y
Convenience fee = z (the amount of which depends on how big x is, don't have a formula for that yet tho :/)
Amount given on a trade-in = p

x - y - z = p
And then price the game at around x, and you have an awesomely priced game store.

Pricing with about what it goes for online plus shipping is exactly how I would do it, seeing as that is my major deciding factor when buying a game, If I can get it online for a lot cheaper than I can wait a few days. At the same time though, for a game I would really want I wouldnt mind paying a few extra bucks to get it right there and verify the condition at the same time.

Spot on with what we have planned, we actually want a separate section that will have cabs and consoles set up for play.
