FIXED! Lost my Internet Updating to Firefox 7

Post by nightrnr »

Okay, so I'm on Win XP and decided to update Firefox from 3.6 to 7.
Geuss what, I can't get online anymore (not evem with Windows Explorer).
(I'm using our other family computer ATM to get online.)

MY PC is using a wireless connection.
I'm not a genius when it comes to network connections, but I've been able to get by well enough with things until now.

Also, I disabled Windows firewall hoping it had something to do with that, but there's no change.
I even did a restore point, whatever changed, it stayed put.

Does anyone have a clue what the hell happened? :lol: ... :cry:

It's not a HUGE deal if not, as I recently swapped my hard drive because the other one was too loud. I could just swap back and plan to NEVER update again. But I'd like to use my quieter one. And I may be forced to update some day.

You broke the internet?!

In all seriousness, sounds like a virus to me.

I wish! Then everyone could share in my misery. :twisted:

No, I just pissed off the internet. It hates me now.

I'll try scanning with malwarebytes or something, but it was working just fine right before the install (that's how I downloaded it).

BTW, my wireless connection is fine (good signal strength and everything).
Personally, I think it just wiped out some protocol settings or something like that. I just have no idea where to find them and/or restore those settings.

Start > Settings > Network Connections

Right click on your wireless one listed and choose repair. If that doesn't work plug yourself in and see if you can get anywhere.

Hobie, you are always there for me; I just want you to know that. :mrgreen:

Yes, I tried the repair connection thing. I do that on a regular basis because my wireless reciever doesn't always initialize correctly after I put the PC in standby.

I also reset (unplugged, waited for 20 sec, then plugge in again) the wireless router, which fixes some issues on occasion.
Still nothing.

I just installed Malwarebytes on that had drive and it somehow was able to download an update :o .
I'm scanning as we type. Hopefully it will find something, but I still think it's a setting somewhere that I need to change back.

Holly Crap! It WAS a virus.

Thanks o.pwuaioc.
I kind of wish it wasn't such an obvious thing though. :oops:
Suggesting a virus is almost as basic as asking if the router was plugged in.
(but it took your recommendation to get me to do it)

Anyways, problem solved.

Thanks guys! :D

From my scan report, it was just some infected registry files:
Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\avsoft (Trojan.Fraudpack) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\avsoft (Trojan.Fraudpack) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Registry Values Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\chfdyuwp (Trojan.FakeAlert.Gen) -> Value: chfdyuwp -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyServer (PUM.Bad.Proxy) -> Value: ProxyServer -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\chfdyuwp (Trojan.FakeAlert.Gen) -> Value: chfdyuwp -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
Not sure how they got on there (as if anyone usually knows where they got a virus). I DO know I had a virus on that hard drive at one time, but I thought I had scanned and deleted it long ago. It has been a while since I used that particular drive though.
I really should have scanned it again in the 1st place, just to be safe.
