Wii displaying jittery image when I try to display 480p

Post by XxBroBuzzxX »

Basically what the title says. I bought some Wii component cables, switched my Wii to 480p in the options menu and now the image is all jittery. Anyone know what the problem is?

Are they thin cables with little to no shielding? Do you have a bad bird's nest behind the TV?

No, the cables are thick with plenty of shielding.

Details! What TV are you using (model, make, etc). Is it just the Wii title screen or games? If games, what game? Got pic's?

My first impression is that the antiquated 480p might just too low for your TV if it's native 720p. But I'm also a (Nintendo) hater...

It's the whole system that's doing jittery picture thing. Can't take a picture currently and I'm using a Toshiba CRT with a flat screen. It has inputs for Composite S-video and Component, can't get a model number though.

I've had similar problems with my Wii component cables, I've described it numerous times in several different thread, but I guess I'll type it out one more time.

First off, I have Nintendo brand component cables, so I'd really hope that they're properly shielded and all that. When I first hooked them up, I switched it to 480p and it seemed fine. Then, it would occasionally start doing this skipping/freezing thing. Periodically, the image on the TV would very slightly jumble and freeze for a few seconds, while the audio continued, and then go back to normal. It started to do it more and more often. It would do it with Wii games, Gamecube games, Photo Channel, anything. It started to do it often, so I had to switch.

I kept the component cables on, but switched back to 480i. This way, I don't get the image freezing any more. Everything seems to work fine except for one thing, Virtual Console games. Playing VC games with component cables in 480i, my TV will some times loose the signal. My TV will actually display the "no input signal" message like the Wii is off. I'll have to switch to another input, then switch back to the Wii to get the picture back. It only does this for VC games though.

I assumed the problem is just that my TV doesn't like the component signal from the Wii for whatever reason, and I kinda left it at that. Recently, some one was trying to help me diagnose the problem via PM, but I haven't had much spare time lately. I haven't had the chance to mess around with it.

It's probably the TV. What is the brand of your TV?

I have some third party Wii component cables and have had no issues. I have a Samsung 52" LCD.

I also suggest trying to do some troubleshooting like hooking up the Wii/cables to another TV to see if the same problem happens.

I have a Dell 32" LCD 720p. I know, weird, right?

When I get around to it, I'll try and hook it up to another TV and see what happens. I could also bring the component cables to my brother's Wii and hook them up on his TV just to test the cables. But yeah, haven't really had the time to run around and do that stuff. One day.

Just cuz you have component doesn't mean your TV is 480P... I learned that the hard way on an older CRT.

Ok, but try to do it soon! I'm curious to know where the problem is. These type of troubleshooting exercises always fascinate me.
