i was interested in getting a super game genie for my snes but i just had a few clarifications i needed to make before i sprung for the purchase
1. are there different versions depending on what region snes you have? i have a super famicom i need one for that. or is there only one that works in any region snes?
2. can you use it as a cartridge converter? i want to also be able to use it so i can play american snes games on my japanese system

Re: info on snes game genie?
US and Japanese games are interchangeable other than the cartridge shape. I'm not sure if there's a Game Genie with a rounded bottom or not. Unfortunately going from US games to other region systems is more difficult because of the shape. My US Game Genie does not have the side pins, so it won't work with games that need them such as Starfox or Chatting Parodious.

Q1. are there different versions depending on what region snes you have? i have a super famicom i need one for that. or is there only one that works in any region snes?
A: I don't believe there is a Super Famicom GameGenie. The SNES and Super Famicom share the same pin connectors, so you don't need to worry about region lockouts. A SNES GameGenie will work in a Super Famicom, BUT...
Q2. can you use it as a cartridge converter? i want to also be able to use it so i can play american snes games on my japanese system
A: ...the SNES GameGenie will NOT fit into a Super Famicom. the GameGenie was designed like North American SNES game cartridges with its rectangle, boxy shape rather than the curved look of the Super Famicom games. If you want to fit a GameGenie into the Super Famicom you have three choices:
1. Remove the casing of the GameGenie and plug it in bare PCB.
2. Remove the top casing of the Super Famicom and plug in any SNES/Super Famicom game
3. Use a dremel tool to modify and enlarge the cartridge slot on the Super Famicom so it can fit a GameGenie or other Super NES games.
Sorry for the bad news, but you won't be able to use a GG as-is on the Super Famicom.

Re: info on snes game genie?
can you still attach other cartridges to the top of the game genie if you take the bare board out of the plastic casing and insert that manually? like i wanna have a bare game genie board in the cartridge slot and a regular ass us snes game attached to the top of it without doing anything to it

Yes, but as noted, my SNES Game Genie doesn't have the outside pins for games with coprocessor chips and the board is going to be flopping around and will need to be kept stable.

Re: info on snes game genie?
As an illustration of that problem, if you look at the image of the cartridges on Wikipedia's SNES article the Japanese/PAL cart in the picture has the side pins. The American one doesn't.
They're not all that common...but if you have a game that has 'em, the Game Genie won't work.
Practically speaking, the easiest, cleanest thing to do if you want to play American and Japanese games on one system is to take an American SNES and cut the tabs out of the cartridge slot. The slot is otherwise large enough to easily fit Japanese carts. Nobody will see it unless they're peering down into the system.
Carts may not fit quite as snugly, but they'd be more stable than if plugged on top of a naked Game Genie, and you wouldn't need to worry about the side pins.

Re: info on snes game genie?
Like they have said before, you cant really mod a game geine on to a super famicom. But maybe??? you can change things to the game geine itself.....
There are some notches on the Game Geine just like in your SNES console, I guess you can probably remove the two notches on the GG and make them fit for Super Famicom games. But I dont wanna mess up my game geine. maybe if I find a second one I'll do that.
So yeah, you could either remove the notches on the snes or remove them from your game geine to play famicom games. kinda like an adapter.
I think there are some other ways to do it but I dare not to! You can do the old evil style of scraping your super famicom games to make it fit too!
I've enclosed some pics of my game geine and some Super famicom games that have been modified ( I Swear, It Wasn't me! )
you can see where the notches are on the game geine too.
