nah it was codename Dolphin and then changed only to GC

Update via GoNintendo"
Update: CNN has an interview with Perrin Kaplan at Nintendo about the name. One of the reasons cited for naming the console now instead of at E3 is to give gamers time to vent, so they'll be used to it by the show and won't be distracted from the games. If you know people are going to need time to vent about your name, shouldn't that indicate that it's a bad choice?"

Yup, right when I buy this, and I am still buying it, I am taking that "Wii" font and replacing it with "Revolution". I'm sure by then I won't even have to as many custom console sites will probably have a skin of some sort. I really like the name "Revolution" and I think they should've stuck with it. Being the most practical and innovative console should mean it has a simple name and not one that needs an inspirational speach to explain it's meaning.

I'm quite ok with it. I found out about it on the Penny Arcade comic. They had a link to this blog, which I think is an interesting read on the subject:

I definitively agree with a lot of what is written there (particularly the part of the names mixup by common people*).
Personally, I don't dislike the name as much as most seem to (but I'm not an native english speaker).
I always like having short and easy names to refer to anything I'm bound to refer to many times (notice other console names are often abbreviated).

I think it was a smart move by Nintendo for a number of reasons, even though it might annoy a heck of a lot of gamers on the homophone problems/jokes with "wee".
I'm not a Nintendo Fanboy (at least I don't think I am), but I think you should show a bit more faith in them. The fact that they were aware it would annoy many shows, to me, that they knew what they were doing and that it wasn't an unfortunate mistake.

Plus, I think the "logo" aspect of it, in particular, was very well accomplished, as well as the wordplays with "we" (which does have the side-effect everyone is concerned about). In the end, what is important for me is that the system does well and has better games because it sold well. I trust Nintendo to know better about that than the usual pundits in the internet.

W i i ! !

Ivo.

*Just recently I was trying to find a N64 cable. My father was with me, and in the first shop we went to the knowledgeable assistant said they didn't have it, but that "a Gamecube cable will work", to which my father replied with "And where can we find that store?".

It's certainly got everyone talking, initially like most people I was dissapointed but it's short and has got heaps of character, just makes me giggle and hey it's only a name I've got friends who refer to the gmecube as the nintendo. I'm just even more excited about it's release now...

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii all the way to the game store I say
