Dead Zune - questions within

Post by Hobie-wan »

So I have in my po-sess-íon a dead 1st gen Zune.

I know I can get a battery for cheap, but the question is whether it's going to help. I've already opened it up which is simple enough. When I plug it in, the drive is making noise, though it's possible it's making a tiny drive click of death. I have no idea what it is supposed to sound like. The drive warms up, but the battery doesn't after 6 or 7 hours of being plugged in. I can't make it come on with or without the battery. I've tried the 2 and 3 finger salutes I've found online trying to reset it, but nothing. Not even a screen with an error number.

Does anyone know if a toasted battery, or no battery at all will prevent it from starting up? Or is this just maybe dead? This was given to me free and dead, so if a sub $10 battery brings it back, cool. But if others have experience with them any input is appreciated

Had my 80gb roughly since launch and use it daily with no hardware issues.

The zune software deciding to randomly remove artists from the device though...

As I said, it wouldn't come on while plugged in with the battery connected or not, nor did the battery warm up after hours of being plugged in so it wasn't charging. The drive was warming up and making a little noise, but I don't know for certain what that drive's click of death might sound like. I know what a PC HD click of death sounds like but the Zune drive isn't exactly loud, even with the cover off I was hoping someone might know if a totally dead battery or lack of one would keep the unit from starting.

As far as I know, the battery is not required as long as the Zune is connected to a power source. The drive death sound is a very rhytmic click, that does not change, much like a metronome. As for the dead zune, I suggest pluging it into a PC. if it attempt to install drivers, the board is not dead. And from what I recall, the screen requires a POST to be able to turn on, so at minimum, a constant flow of current maybe required (which may require a good capacitor or the battery, I'm not sure at this point)
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Previously I had just been plugging it into the wall. Plugging it into the PC it definitely sounded like a click of death this time. My computer didn't even acknowledge I'd plugged anything in. I wonder why it was behaving differently this time. Still no error number on the screen and the sound, I'm considering it toast then. Somehow I don't think it's worth me buying a drive and perhaps a battery unless someone's got a dirt cheap one that just has a busted screen.
