My Mortal Kombat-Related Pet Peeve
I hate when people judge the Mortal Kombat series by their old home console ports. They say "Oh, Mortal Kombat.. that game was just ok" or "Mortal Kombat sucks! I had it on Sega." Yeah, you had the half-assed Genesis/SNES translations. But you never played the full definitive arcade versions! Because if you did then you'd know that MK kicks fucking ass!!!

Couldn't this be said about many fighters though? Arcade is king for this genre, even if the home ports offered more in the way of options, modes, and characters.Weekend_Warrior wrote:I hate when people judge the Mortal Kombat series by their old home console ports. No I don't think so because the Street Fighter 16-bit ports (and higher) were all pretty close to the arcade . But there was an incredible amount of graphical detail, sound bits and content lacking in ALL the home versions of MK 1 & 2 (even the PSX/Saturn MKII versions where the sound was completely jacked).Ack wrote:Couldn't this be said about many fighters though? MK3 on the PS1 was decent, and UMK3 on the Saturn was good. But all others before that took a major beating. And those are the games that a lot of people my age remember - playing those shitty ports.

The problem with Mortal Kombat is the block button. That's what makes it the lesser fighter.

Well it's certainly what 'blocks' a lot of fighter fans from being able to pick up the game easily.MrPopo wrote:The problem with Mortal Kombat is the block button. That's what makes it the lesser fighter.

But what about titles like Primal Rage (which fared horribly in all of its ports) or Killer Instinct? Or the 16-bit Samurai Shodown ports? Or nearly any SNK fighter released on the SNES? They all lost quite a bit from the translation.Weekend_Warrior wrote:No I don't think so because the Street Fighter 16-bit ports (and higher) were all pretty close to the arcade . I'm not saying I disagree with you. I'm not really into Mortal Kombat, but having played the arcade games and being an owner of the SNES ports, I definitely agree that the series shouldn't be judged based on those lesser-quality home releases. I just think there are other games where the same thing happened.

Virtua Fighter says you don't know jack about fighting games.MrPopo wrote:The problem with Mortal Kombat is the block button. That's what makes it the lesser fighter.
Re: My Mortal Kombat-Related Pet Peeve
Admittedly though a block button in a 3D fighter is considered acceptable, because "back" can change in an instant as someone moves on the Z-axis.SplashChick wrote:Virtua Fighter says you don't know jack about fighting games.MrPopo wrote:The problem with Mortal Kombat is the block button. Tekken did without it just fine. There's no excuse for it, the hate for block buttons is simply pure laziness and a lack of will to learn a new control scheme. That's all there is to it.
