Your Opinion on Donkey Kong Country

Post by BurningDoom »

Do you like this series of games? I'm just wondering, because on another message board I frequent there are number of people that have a meh attitude towards it. They think it's just another dime-a-dozen 2D platformer and the only thing that stood out were it's graphics for the time. I was surprised. I've always felt it was one of the BEST 2D platformers, not just another one. Sure, it does have great graphics for SNES, but it also has great platforming IMO. Am I wrong here? Do I have a biased image of this game?

I think the first two are excellent platformers, and that the third is a bit of a turd in comparison (although still better than many, many others). The graphics are only a small part of it. The perfection of the levels, the excellent choice in animals to ride, the hidden collectibles, the bonus areas, the fun characters, figuring out how to really max out your abilities, getting the timing down..it all adds up to a very delicious package.

The series as a whole definitely ranks in my top five platformers.

Edit: I think anyone who says it's just about the graphics didn't really play through the games, or just doesn't like platformers.

We had a big topic about this recently:

I love the trilogy to death, probably in favor of their ordered release. The original game is the easiest and simplest by far, but it's just so atmospheric and amazing to me it's been my favorite since forever. DKC2 I love as well with it upping the difficulty a ton and it feels very attached to the first game, like you're taking the battle to K. Rool himself to finish the fight. DKC3 is way more detached and I hate the first two worlds, but after that I think it's pretty awesome as well.

Amazing stuff.

Definitely one of the best platformers on the SNES. I agree Xeogred that the original is just an awesome game, great sounds, music, graphics, gameplay, controls, all at a very decent difficulty too. Second and third didn't bring me in like the others did, but still good platformers.

I *was* going to play Ocarina of Time, but now I think I'll play DKC instead!

(PS - would it be better to merge the two topics?)

They are my favorite platformers on the SNES, the only other game I would put in their ranks is Yoshi's Island. Might have something to do with nostalgia because I was obsessed with them as a kid, but even playing them recently they still hold up as great games. The music is unforgettable, great level design and gameplay variety - barrel shooting, vine swinging, riding/morphing into animals, different main characters each game all with their own abilities - it never gets dull.

I think the first DKC was quite revolutionary and broke new ground in video gaming but after that it just seemed more of the same to me.

Can't really say anything that hasn't already been said. Love the series. When I hear the music I just have to smile.

I enjoyed the first two games, but I can only go back to them once in a while

As a kid I always thought that DKC was overrated. The graphics were great but I never could really get into the game. In all fairness I've never spent more than 15-20 minutes it, and did the same thing with Street Fighter 2. I went back as an adult and tried SF2 again after deciding I wanted to get into fighting games, and now I love it. Maybe someday I'll go back and pick up DKC and find out what I missed.
