Your Hardest Games

Post by Sideroller »

I just beat Sonic 2 for about the 5th time maybe and I was only able to do it on my VERY last continue and with about 1 life left. Sonic 2 is so much harder than the other Sonic games! I like Sonic 2 but it's not my favorite in the franchise. I've always been partial to S3&K myself - but with 2 in a close second mainly because of the the difficulty. I didn't even try and get all the emeralds though (which is impossible with tails following you).

To this day few games have challenged as much as Sonic 2. Anyone else have a game they always manage to suck at or challenge them?

I think I kind of summed up some of this stuff in the "How hard do you like it?" thread.

But I do have to chime in and say yeah Sonic 2... honestly I think the Sonic games are all very easy, but Sonic 2's final boss fight with no rings and the pure trial and error fight with Robotnik has never been fun. I always solo on Sonic 2 and go without Tails. Personally the game probably has my least favorite Emerald stages out of the old Sonic games.

On the other hand despite being my favorite, Sonic CD probably has one of the easiest final boss fight, ever. Dang is it pathetic.

The main game on sonic 2 is easy enough, but the fight with robotniks mech thing at the end is hellish.

Anyhow, the hardest game I've beaten would probably have to be Ecco the Dolphin for mega drive - long hard levels, instant deaths in some of them and the machine - a 7 minute long forced scrolling labyrinth where one wrong turn means instant death, full of enemies capable of killing you very, very quickly (sometime instantly if you're unlucky) with plenty of walls to crush you. Did I mentioned the walls SHOOT at you too? Or that of you beat it you fight the final boss. Or that losing to the final boss makes you have to do it again? Oh god I hate that level

Ninja Gaiden is a pretty stereotypical choice, but I find that game horribly difficult. 6-2 is the bane of my game playing existence.

Sonic 2 is my favorite in the series. I don't find any of the Sonic games to be difficult at all though.

As for hardest games beaten, Ninja Gaiden 2, Castlevania, and Battletoads come to mind. They're just so hard because they're "Nintendo Hard" though and just stomp on you.

As for more recent games, I've done a Big Boss emblem run on Metal Gear Solid 4 (no kills/deaths/rations/alerts), got a no death run on Demon's Souls, beat God Hand on Hard mode, and beat Devil May Cry 4 on Dante Must Die mode. All that was pretty tough.

I did fine with the majority of Mega Man Legends due to the fact that I have an immunity to the boredom that most people get from grinding [money grinding from mini-games, in this case], until the very last boss, which had me throwing the Dualshock at the wall.

You know, there's a section on the Death Egg where it's trivial to get 100 rings, plus an extra life. IIRC, you've come up from underneath and you have to choose whether to go left or right. If you go left you come to an edge with a fin with 2 or 3 rotating platforms you can jump on until you get to the top of the fin for the extra life. Go back to the right and there are plenty of coins to gather for another extra life. Commit suicide and you can repeat this as many times as you want, gathering as many lives as you need to beat the final boss comfortably.

Here's a few indie games that will kick you in the crotch, steal your lunch money, laugh in your face, then put the video on youtube and e-mail to all your friends just before they kill your family in front of you using only a spork from Taco Bell.

I Wanna Be The Guy (free full download)

Super Meat Boy (free flash version prototype, pay for full game)

VVVVVV (free flash version demo, pay for full game)

Give Up Robot 2 (free flash game)

Super Mario Forever (free NES rom)

Oh, and this video of someone playing Super Mario Forever is hilarious:

I've managed to beat VVVVVV (full version) and Give Up Robot 2, but forget about the others.

For something I conquered a few years ago that's also old school, I'd say beating Thunder Force IV was incredibly satisfying. You wouldn't believe how shocked I was when I found out stage 8 was NOT the final level, even though it's your usual flesh-like environment and it had several minibosses on top of a crazy weird boss at the end topped off with some of the best music ever. I spent about a week off and on playing the game, getting just one level closer to the end day by day or so until I finally beat it, epic stuff.

Pretty sure I pulled that off as well, along with Heaven & Hell mode (where you killed stuff in one hit I think, but you died in one hit too?), don't think I cleared Hell & Hell mode though ... clearing that survival tower mode or whatever it was, that was pretty insane too. I had a blast with this game and all its modes honestly.

S&K is really easy if you attach it to Sonic 3 and you can save.

Even then I can still beat it without the save and with all emeralds. Maybe it's just because I play it way more than Sonic 2. ...Now Sonic 2 with Knuckles on the other hand....Robotnik's last battle is even HARDER with that since Knuckles can jump as high. But if you manage to get behind Robotnik you can pretty much hit him without worrying though it's tricky.

And I agree that the emerald levels for sonic 2 are a pain in the ass.

GAH! I still have this game. You're right, that final boss is a son of a gun! I never beat him, but I haven't played it in a lONG time.
