Alternatives for playing Game Gear cartridges?

Post by FerretGamer »

I've been researching this and I can't seem to find much.

Obviously, technology has improved quite a bit and we now have far superior LCD and LED screens. In addition, I'm sure the size as well as the battery performance of the Game Gear could be improved.

I am well aware of the Majesco release that has a slightly improved screen. However, even a Game Gear "clone" system would be interesting similar to all those Yobo systems and what not. I know there is one that has Game Gear games built in and supports flash cards; however, it is a shame to see the cartridges become useless. :(

Soo... I'm wondering if there are any alternatives that allow one to play the real physical Game Gear cartridges besides for just on a Game Gear. It doesn't just have to be handheld form even an adapter would be interesting.

Officially, sega released a Wide Gear to developers and gaming magazines.

Aside from modding a Gamegear for RGB, Chris Covell has modified some Game Gear roms to play on a SMS via a SMS flash cart:

I've been looking for something like this for a while myself. I haven't found anything, well anything short of ridiculous amounts of modding or experimental projects. A while back someone was trying to consolise a game gear, as well as a Neo Geo Pocket Color, but I don't think they every did. Also saw another project for a Game Gear adapter for the Genesis, but again never saw any results.

Since Sega never continued the Game Gear line, and never made an adapter for it, there really was no official way. I don't think there's even been a clone system to play Game Boy games, which were excessively more popular.

If you feel technically inclined, you could replace the LCD with a newer, better quality, more efficient one. That would still be the Game Gear, but it would certainly help with playability. That's what I'm gonna do, and replace the battery in my Sega PowerBack so it'll last for a good 10 hours or so, theoretically.

As for playing Game Gear games on a Master System, that would possibly require a lot of ROM modification. The Game Gear may be based on the Master System's hardware, but it did get a few upgrades, mainly the color pallet and the Stereo sound.
