The Best 2D Saturn games

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

We all know the Saturn was an awesome 2D powerhouse. What 2D games are the best though?

I'd like this to be in the same format as the Top 100 lists except maybe with some extra discussion, as this list will obviously be shorter.

So to start off,

Street Fighter Alpha 2.

In my opinion, the best Street Fighter game of all time, made even better by the great animation the Saturn can handle. In fact, the intro cut scene is completely made with sprites, while the PS1 version was an FMV. Also it runs at a solid 60fps with no slowdown. The colours are also vibrant, while they are a little washed out on the PS1. If you have a Saturn and like fighting games but don't have it, you need it. Pick yourself up a copy of this game, an SVideo cable, and make sure you have the Model 2 controller. You won't be disappointed, even if you don't like fighting games, it's fun to watch.
...and I don't like 2D fighting games. Except for this one. :)

6. Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge

Beautiful in S-Video, and I feel this game was the best out of the trilogy..

Yeah, most arcade ports on the Saturn beat the PSX versions for sure.

It's funny though how in some cases for shmups, that laggy framerate on other systems is often a blessing. I'm thinking of the Genesis versions of Thunder Force III / IV for instance, when I played the Gold edition of the games on the Saturn it was almost awkward without the lag and in a sense a lot more challenging without those slowdowns since everything was so much smoother and faster.
