PS2 won't read DVDs
PS2 won't read DVDs
So I picked up a ps2 phat a few days ago. I turned it on and it only reads ps1 games, blue disc ps2 games, and cds. It will not read regular ps2 games or dvds. What should I do to remedy this problem?

hiya swiftzx , you can try and clean the Laser Lens with Isopropyl Alcohol theres videos on Youtube on how to do it.
I bought a FAT PS2 from someone for 10US and it would only read PS2 CD based games and not DVD based.
The Laser Lens has 2 POTs on it , 1 for DVD 1 for CD media........i have a Tutorial App for PC which i used to adjust the DVD POT ( link is below ). It took a few tweaks and it started to run DVD media.
I do recommend though using a Hard Drive with your FAT PS2 , they last years and can be replaced easily. Theres a few Loaders out there to run games such as HDLoader and Open PS2 Loader , i use them over using the PS2 Optical Drive.
Also i use FMCB ( Free Memory Card Boot ) what this is an app that boots to whatever ' elf ' i want , for example i just turn on my PS2 and it boots to ulaunchelf and then i can select OPL or HDLoader or any other elf. All you need is to install FMCB to you PS2 memory card and have a USB Key with your elfs on that. I can bypass using the PS2 Optical Drive entirely with this system.

Re: PS2 won't read DVDs
This is one of the things Sony fixed when they made the PS2 Slim. Though I usually hear about not being able to play CD games, not DVD. But anyway, apparently the lens used in the original PS2 was either really prone to impact/movement problems, or was just bad in general because I hear about the old PS2 not reading discs all the time. As for a fix, other then just seeing if the lens is dirty, there really isn't an option, that I know of, other then replacing the lens, which is pretty hard from what I've heard.

Re: PS2 won't read DVDs
the DVD laser is probably dying or dead. but before you try adjsuting the voltage pot for it, i would reccomend cleaning the lens with alcohol and a q-tip and also trying to adjust the height gear (its a white gear near the back of the drive, if this gets knocked out of alignment it can cause read errors and stuff.)
need console mods or repairs? check my thread here:

Re: PS2 won't read DVDs
I have one that doesn't read discs at all. A 500 gig hard drive fixed everything.
If you need to replace it I was gonna suggest modchip.ca but they only have slim lasers (brand new & work perfectly BTW).
This guy's stuff is a bit expensive, but in my experience it's always tested to work before being sold. I've bought a bunch of stuff from him and have no complaints.

Find your unit's version and click ps2 replacement parts -> shop by version. He probably has what you need.
