Top 25 Killer Apps for the NES Powerpak

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

Over the past several months I've been preparing a list of the top 25 essential games for Retrozone's NES Powerpak. Why 25? Seemed like a good number. The only qualification would be that the games must work with the latest powerpak mappers and must not include any commercially available NES games.

After extensive play testing, I feel I've come up with a pretty good list. Check it out!

Let me know what you guys think and feel free to drop any further recommendations.

If the fan translation of Final Fantasy III is there, why not the fan translation of II? Doesn't the Powerpak support it? It's not that baaaaaaaad....

Yes, the powerpak supports Final Fantasy II, but I don't feel it's quite in the same league as FF3. I've played every main Final Fantasy game many times and the first few ones in many different versions, and no matter what version I play FF2 doesn't capture my attention. I suppose I could write a paragraph for it later though, just for you

I updated the list slightly to remove Micky Mania 7 because it doesn't work and replaced it with the worth Ganbare Goemon 2. check it out!

Sweet, but why was this posted twice? There is one that was posted in the reviews section 3 hours after this one was posted. Hmmmmmm.

pretty much to expose it to different readers. Not everyone checks out the reviews section and the list isn't precisely a review anyway, but it sort of is. So yeah, its both?

How about blade buster? Edit* looks like you covered it at the end. Its too bad 8 bit Left 4 Dead cant be played on Powerpack. That would be sweet.

Great topic for an article! A few of my thoughts:

I think I would have considered the enhanced/restored Donkey Kong a commercial release, personally. Still a killer app for Powerpak regardless.

If the enhancements for Gradius I & II count as one entry, and the two D-Pad Hero games count as on entry, why not combine the Rockman Endless series together? You'd have room on your list for more awesome stuff that way!

I can't praise Blade Buster enough! I still have this feeling of disbelief every time I see it running on my NES.

Have you played either of the translations of the Japanese edition of Contra? It adds a cutscene-driven story and a ton of cool animation we never got previously. The translations of Akumajou Densetsu also are a notable improvement over the Western release of Castlevania III.

There are a lot of really cool fan games made as ROM hacks of the original Super Mario Bros that I think are worthy of mention, and nearly all of them should work on the Powerpak. There are much more impressive ones than this, but one of my old favorites is here: http://www.zophar.net/hacks/nes/super-m ... --254.html

Finally, if you like MDbtroid, you might want to take a look at an old hack of SMB that I started over a decade ago. The bar on SMB hacks has been raised quite a bit since I started it, and people don't pay a lot of attention to graphics-only hacks of SMB anymore, but I still receive praise for it once in awhile. I'm currently wrapping up a major overhaul after a six year break from the project, but the currently released version is here:
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/144/
It will work on the Powerpak if you fix the header. This won't be an issue in the next release.
