I know people asking wether burnt Dreamcast games are bad for the GD-Rom drive come up a lot.
I was thinking though: wouldn't it be harder for the laser to read as the files will be fragmented all over the disc, so the laser assembly would move forward and back a lot more than what they would with a real GD-Rom disc. Therefore making the Dreamcast's GD-Rom drive die quicker..?
I know this comes up all of the time, but...
Re: I know this comes up all of the time, but...
Yes. This is why better DC rips are padded and sorted to avoid this. Here are instructions for ripping a GDI such that file order is preserved and padded.

Re: I know this comes up all of the time, but...
Anyone know any sites that have good rips?

If you're gonna play burns on your Dreamcast, try to only use this guy's releases...

He pays strict attention to file order and whatnot. And when some sort of compression has to be made to fit the image on a CD, his releases are usually of better quality in that department as well.
If you have any burns for DC, you might wanna get rid of them and get Tux's versions instead. They'll definitely put less stress on the drive. In fact, I remember some one saying that his Tony Hawk release has better file order than the official game.

There used to be some guy on the snesorama boards that insisted on using 99 min CD-Rs w/ overburn enabled. I'm wondering if this is the same guy? I had his files bookmarked on my old computer but that particular bookmark was never migrated.Ziggy587 wrote:If you're gonna play burns on your Dreamcast, try to only use this guy's releases...

I say get everything from Dreamcast-Talk, Snesorama has dumb popups and adds and shit, Tuxthewise uses Dreamcast-Talk as a home base, and all his releases can be found there, along with the newcomer Captain Dreamcast, which optomizes his releases just like Tux does.
You need to sign up and register to see the downloads index, but ours is clean and very organized.

I also have uploaded all known Bleemcast PS1 beta games that are self boot, games like Driver 2, and Klonoa and Strider 2 are recomended, as emulation is good.

Tux dosen't make many 99min releases, and all his games work on 80min cdr's.s1mplehumar wrote:There used to be some guy on the snesorama boards that insisted on using 99 min CD-Rs w/ overburn enabled. Thanks for the tip. I agree that snesorama is very polluted.Anthony817 wrote:I say get everything from Dreamcast-Talk, Snesorama has dumb popups and adds and shit, Tuxthewise uses Dreamcast-Talk as a home base, and all his releases can be found there, along with the newcomer Captain Dreamcast, which optomizes his releases just like Tux does.

Dreamcasts are cheap. $15 - $20, just buy a second one. If the first one fails then worry about how the CD's are ripped. Heck for $15 is cheaper then reburning all the CD games you have plus your time.

Did you post about Captain Dreamcast in another thread recently? I remember some one posting that there's another guy making excellent DC releases, but I couldn't remember the details. Anyways, thanks for the heads up about Dreamcast-Talk. I had Tux's page at Snesorama bookmarked for a while, and that's what I always post here. Now I'll take a look at Dreamcast-Talk and update my bookmark.
edit: I just checked Dreamcast-Talk and couldn't find Tux's page. I found his Dreamcast Resurrection thread, but it says it's outdated. You wouldn't happen to have a link, would you?
But there's also the fact that the Dreamcast drive is ANNOYINGLY loud. Games that have optimized file orders, like Tux's releases, will make the system quieter (since the lens wont have to move as much). Forget about wear and tear, the noise alone is enough to worry about!env963 wrote:Dreamcasts are cheap. $15 - $20, just buy a second one.
