Sega Mega CD 2 power supply rant

I finally got myself a Sega CD 2, or rather Sega Mega CD 2 since it's the PAL version. It came without a power supply but I have spare ones so that's not a problem. It works and I love it.
However I was puzzled by the fact that it uses a Megadrive/Genesis Model 1 power supply. Seriously, WTF Sega? It is meant to be used with the model 2 console so why on Earth is it using a model 1 PSU? Why, God, why? I mean, there is nothing wrong with either type of supply but what was the reason for this? Why not have 2 identical power supplies for the console and the add-on. The Genesis 2, Nomad and 32X all use the same (newer) supply so why not the Sega CD 2 as well. I even have a Genesis 2 clone which uses a type 2 PSU. Madness!
And why the change in PSUs in the first place. All they changed was the plug/socket. So why bother in the first place?
Also, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Game Gear in the States use a model 2 PSU? So why do my European Game Gears use model 1?
Somebody explain this to me please! Please...please...please...

Nurse, can I have my pills now?

could be worse the Sega CDX has the same pin connector but a different amp then the sega 2... so you mess up your CDX because you didnt read the amps

Try to think of it this way. People are already pissed that the Mega Drive 1 and 2 use their own kinds of cables (both A/V and AC). It would be worse if the Mega CD II followed suit and used a model II power supply rather than how the Model I came with a model 1 style AC adapter. At least they kept things same for the Mega CD overall in terms of plugging the thing in.

Yes, our Game Gears here work with a model 2 AC adapter instead.
