Mother 2 cheaper than Earthbound?

Post by MattJay »

Why are complete in box copies of Mother 2 for Super Famicom so much cheaper than an unboxed Earthbound?

Mother 2 CIB runs for about 30-35 bucks but a loose Earthbound cart can go for upwards of 90 bucks. What gives? Is Mother 2 really that common?

The Japanese also enjoyed a re-release of the whole series. Nothing knocks resale value down like a rerelease.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The demand for Earthbound is really high and people are willing to pay high prices for it so...

It's nothing uncommon, a lot of Super Famicom games are cheaper than their SNES counterpart. And this isn't just limited to the SNES.

I think the other posts here have answered the question well.

It, along with a lot of other RPGs, was VERY popular in Japan. Since it was so popular, it is also extremely popular. Maybe CIB on eBay for US$30-35. Probably $10-15 in game shops in Akihabara, and $1-5 in rural shops in Japan (nobody will sell you it for this cheap, unless they are your personal friends!).

The Jp version also isn't in english. There's way more english speakers in the world than japanese, so higher demand for the eng version.

Imagine if Nintendo released 23.35 million copies of Earthbound Snes while only 140,000 were made. There were only 23.35 million of those snes units sold in the Americas. its weird how Nintendo made less games then more copies for each console owner.

The game sold 140,000 copies in North America, and about twice that number in Japan.

this is the main point isnt it. most english speakers do not read japanese, therefore the jap version although cheaper and cib is useless.
