Hey Guys, I have two copies of Tomba for PS1, hoping to sell one of them soon. Problem is one of them has a Blockbuster protective shield which I think drops the value quite a bit. Does anybody know a safe way to remove it without damaging? Any help is appreciated.

I ruined a sonic adventure limited edition trying to do that... I hate those things.

I've removed one successfully from a copy of Mega Man Legends 2. It's not impossible to remove, it's just really time consuming and you have to be really careful. I used a hairdryer on the disc until I could get the sticker/shield loose enough to begin VERY SLOWLY peeling it. Be very steady and careful and you'll be okay.

DON"T DO IT.
Too much a risk of peeling away the painted label, and the reflective data track. The Protective Shield was a good idea for rentals in its day. To protect that fragile label side from careless customers. As drives became faster, added weight threw the off center balance.

I ruined a SF III Third Strike for DC (that already only booted 1 out of 10 times because of the imbalance and scuffs) even though I was being careful and using a hairdryer on low to warm up the glue. I was peeling from the center at one point and the reflective layer just came right up with the skin.

Another vote for leaving it be.

I would also say leave it because you don't want to take the risk and potentially ruin the disc.

you have to be careful sometimes when you remove sticky labels and such. When you put one in your console, and as they spin, sometimes it gets stuck in the system!

I've had it happen on my fat PS2, I had a PS1 game, and it still had some stickyness on it. when I tried to remove the game, it made funny sounds and it came out weird. I guess it was sticking to the spinning plastic thing that keeps the disc in place.

What the hell are you guys talking about? I'm genuinely curious. Is it some sort of tamper-proof sticker they put on discs?

It's a sticker that goes on the top surface of a disc like these. Rental places obviously had the store name and whatnot on them. The SFIII I had from blockbuster was really terrible because it had a bimetal security strip across one side which made the disc wobble horribly in a drive. That plus scratches made my disc not work most of the time. I pulled the strip out. but of course then it wobbled the other direction because of the loss of weight of the skip where the strip was. My Panzer Dragoon II has a Movie Gallery skin on it, but at least it is skin only so I've just left it.

I've had some success in the past removing those, but I also ruined two Project Justice discs.

A combination of the hairdryer and goo gone methods worked best for me, but I don't remember which order I did them in (heat then soak, or soak then heat). I think I also put some more Goo Gone under the label as I was peeling. But when you heat it, you really need to heat it up for a good long while, and you need to peel super slowly or you'll destroy it.
