Sega Europe rep Izaskun Urretabizkaia has reportedly revealed that a brand new Sonic game is being developed to coincide with the blue blur's 20th anniversary.
The title - currently being referred to as Sonic Anniversary - has not been officially confirmed by Sega yet, but according to Destructoid translations it will feature remakes of levels from older Sonic the Hedgehog games.
The update aims to bring classic titles fans of the series will be familiar with to the current generation of consoles complete with all the lavish trimmings. According to the report, levels will be a mixture of 2D and 3D environments.
A new true-bit Sonic game, done in the exact style as the Genesis games (no 2.5D, a la the awesome Sonic 4, but honest-to-God even-more-awesome S3&K), with the original styles and every character playable. Sonic's the best, but more characters makes for more replayability. I mean, after beating S3&K w/ Knux, then Tails, and then Sonic (he can't fly or glide).
And by every character, I mean EVERY character.
Also... where's the effin SONIC MOVIE?! I'll start a stand-alone thread for that.

The last thing that I want to see is a movie based on the Sonic X cartoon. And you know that that's what would happen if they were to make a movie. Like a new Pokemon movie. Don't get me wrong, Pokemon is my favorite game series, but the new anime is pretty bad. I'll watch it if it's on, but it's pretty terrible. To me, Sonic X is the same except that I'm not as big of a fan of Sonic, so there are no bumps up.
