Play the demo. It cuts a game off before AD, and you're restricted to random maps and only one nation, but it lets you get a good feel.
So far I'm in love. The hexes aren't a big deal to me, and the removal of Deathstacking was good. No more spearmen beating tanks. They removed religion, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your opinion, but they greatly simplified cultural victories too. The city-states are an amazing bonus, and completely change the strategy at times. For example, I was on a duel map against India, and since Ghandi was being very pacifistic, I annexed the two nonviolent city-states, and got on the good side of the two militaristic ones, who happened to be on India's borders. Then I was able to invade easily.
I've played 12 hours, and barely scratched the surface. I haven't tried any really huge maps, any mods, done the diplomacy or tech victory trees, or had a game advance to the point I could use futuristic- or even modern- weaponry.

If there's a demo I will try it a bit. I looked around a bit and the reaction has been mixed specially concerning the bonuses of city states and build speed in the early ages.

I've enjoyed the demo thus far, and played a few rounds of the real thing on a friend's rig. Still need to buy it, but I'm holding out hope for a discount/special.
