Sega Saturn 1MB vs 4MB Cart Question

Post by swimbikerun »

So obviously 4MB games (X-Men vs SF, MSH vs SF, etc) require the 4 MB cart. And games that require 1MB (Metal Slug, KOF 97, etc) are compatible using the 4MB cart as well. I saw a post recently somewhere that said that the games designed for the 1MB cart actually run worse on the 4MB cart due to memory addressing issues. Is there any truth to that? I currently run a NTSC-J White Saturn with the Sega 4MB Ram Cart so I was wondering if that is true that I need to pick up a 1MB cart. Thoughts?

It's possible, for the dedicated 4M carts.

I think your best option would be to get an action replay 4 in 1

These things are amazing. Its a 4M cart, 1M cart, import player, memory card, and code device all in one unit.

I always thought the 4in1 carts had 4M, meaning they would run both 4 and 1 M cart games, however as the 1M is not dedicated wouldn't the OP's question come into effect with 4in1's as well.

We need someone who has a 4M and 1M cart to test!

Having never owned a Saturn, this entire facet to the system confuses me greatly. Saturn games were released in such a fashion that you needed an add-on to make them run correctly?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Not exactly, some games either came bundled with carts that had most of the animations for sprites pre-loaded on them, or there were RAM carts you could buy that would let you load all the game animations in (but slower than the dedicated game specific carts with the animation already on them) so that you could get arcade perfect ports.

They weren't add-ons as much as the PS1's memory card was, it's mostly complimenting the game so that it runs better and smoother with more detail. There are some games that require a RAM cart or their own specific carts that came bundled with them to work though.
