Should I get a Saturn?

Post by Pichu »

Well, I have been evaluating my choices very carefully recently, and I've decided I want to get a new console, and it will most likely be a Saturn. My local game store has one for $40, AV Cable, Power Cable and one controller, and has a decent (as in games and price) selection of games. I'm wondering if I should go for it. I know alot of good titles are either Imports, or extremely expensive, but I know I can get some games I'll love that are semi-cheap and U.S. released.

Should I? :?

What are your other options? What else would you do with that money?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Well, this money is extra money put aside solely to buy a new console.
It's been saved for a while. Other options:

PS1
Sega Master System
Atari 7800 (one that works)
N64 items

Hell yeah, you should get a Saturn. Well actually, what kind of games are you into? It has lots of great 2-d fighters, a handful of good beat'em ups, some decent platformers and a few great rpgs among other things. Basically, if you love 2-d games you'll find lots to love

The great thing about a Saturn is if you get it modded you can do a lot of gaming for free if you want to go that route. So that makes the more expensive titles easy for you to try out

For forty bucks, I don't see any reason NOT to get a Saturn, but again it depends on what you're looking to play. Here's some cheap starter games:

You might get more mileage out of a PS1 though. TONS of great games on that, but a lot more 3-d type games on the PS1. Saturn is ideal for 2-d lovers

Forget everything you know about Saturn. This is the real reason to get one. It's cheap its fun and the game disc doubles for a soundtrack.

Yeah, I really enjoy 2D games, that's one of the main reason I want a Saturn.
Also, that Daytona intro was pretty awesome.

I am assuming you already own a N64 since you said items and not a PS1. To be honest a PS1 (if you don't have a PS2 or PS3) would be the better choice first as its the best all around console of that generation. With $40 you could get a system plus quite a few games to play. I love my Saturn overall more, but there is way more to be had on the PS1 library and a lot cheaper than the saturn counterparts.

Now if you already have a way to play PS1 games, Saturn would be a great choice and you should definatly get one if you love the 32 bit era. Its going to be more of an investment and you'll most likely have to import some games, but its worth it.

By the way believe it or not the PS1 had a lot of 2D, definatly more in America and maybe Japan. Here's a US list.

Yeah I have a way to play PS1 games, because me and my neighbor are good friends, and he has a PS2 I can go over and play sometimes.

So I feel a Saturn would be a good choice. Thanks guys.

If you love 2D games then really its not even a question. Get one and see what all the fuss is about.

Also if you like light gun games there are some fun ones, and minus the us version of House of the Dead they are all pretty cheap.

Also the 40 you mentioned is a good price. The prices on ebay are a bit higher than i remember last year. I wish i could get one at that price. The local retro game store in my town wants 69.99

I would definitely pick up a Saturn. It has many great 2D classics and is well worth the investment.
