Funny but turning more and more true with each passing day. Apparently Sony has been losing their exlusive titles deals, the creator of FF wants FFXIII to be on 360 as well and went as far as saying that "I think FF's existance can only continue with the 360" something along those lines anyway. I've heard DMC4 was being ported, pretty much every big title that PS3 is supposed to only have there is a rumor or confirmed rumor that it's being ported to 360. They've really fouled up this time.

Sad, but true.

Sony should have used a standard DVD drive and sold the PS3 with all the features of the 60GB model for like $400. Really with dual-layer DVDs do that many games use more then 8GB? Multi-disc releases aren't something new... Then mabey they could have offer a premium model with the blu-ray drive, bigger hard drive, and mabey TV recording capabilities for $800 or so. Like the PSX...I still want one of those.

True, but Lair will definately use all 25GB, or 50GB if they are using the dual disc. Factor Five uses about 4GB per level or so they need the space...Honestly, other than Lair, the PS3 has no other games that look interesting whatsoever. :? Plus, that realistic people community thing is just ugly...

You're missing the bigger picture. The only reason for PS3's existance is to promote BluRay over HD-DVD. That's all. Like the PSP before it (UMD promotion engine). The thing that Sony doesn't seem to remember is its track record with media formats:

Betamax: lost against inferior technology (VHS)
Minidisc: lost against existing technology (tape/CD)
UMD: lost against existing technology (DVD)

Who here thinks BluRay will be any different?

Besides, Joe Sixpack just spent thousands of dollars he can't afford to upgrade his VHS tapes to DVD. He's not going to run out and re-buy his movies again. It was far to early to try and replace DVD with something new. I'm betting HD-DVD and BluRay will go the way of Laserdisc.

I'm curious as to how much of that 4GB per level is duplicate data spread through the disc to reduce load times and improve data streaming... Like, certain models, textures, and other actors/objects are common through the entire game, and it would be slow as dirt for the laser to be bouncing from the Final Level area of disc data to the first level data area to load up the standard crate object model and back to load the next area in the level.

Well of course they want to promote blu-ray, it is ashame the PS3 has to take the fall for it. I think the only success in media standards Sony had was the CD-ROM - but if course that was developed with Philips. Had Sony and Toshiba collaborated to create one single next generation DVD format, I'd have little doubt that it would have succeeded in the long run.

As for blu-ray and hd-dvd now? To early to tell really. I don't think you'll really see them take off like standard DVDs did until you can just go buy one at Walmart for $50. As for me I'm betting my money on HVD (holographic) and Tapestry media - whichever makes it to the market first at affordable prices.

As for UMD....if they really wanted it to succeed Sony should have either released a cheap UMD player for televisions or somekind of DVD/UMD combo unit. A PC UMD drive wouldn't have bad either. I read somewhere that the UMD movies are actually in high resolution? Is that true?

As for the Playstation 3, I don't think it is to late to save the brand in the long run. They could re-release a new hardware revision using a standard DVD drive and mandate all future games use the DVD format only. Previous games released on blu-ray could hypothetically be re-released on DVD. Oh well....one can wish.

Don't underestimate the use for more space. For over 20 years people have been saying things similar to you guys about storage needs in video games and computers. Older "tech" people laugh about the terabyte HDs being totally unnecessary, but I could use several terabytes to hold everything I would want reduntantly. The PS2 was getting some of the same flak over the DVD format and even the PSX was running into the same debate vs N64 fans. I found the 4 CD FFVIII and FFIX format obnoxious and it was obvious that FFIX was too big for CD and Square made destructive design decisions because of the constraints. Extra space on a BluRay disc could be used to hold high definition 1080p movie content or we could someday see a BluRay disc that has a PC/Mac version along side a PS3 version. Unfortunately the BluRay drive in the PS3 is somewhat slow and I'm still confused about how the PS3 is going to do much 1080 anything with 2x256mb ram.

Also hooking up an external 1tb HD to the PS3 would solve the BluRay load time issue... like that will happen.

One of the nice things about the PS3 and even the 360 is that because of their power, the companies can compress the HD videos really tiny with robust compression algorithms, something that the last generation consoles can't even keep up with. This means less space and more video, considering the storage! Same goes with sound. :)

Really tiny and playable on the current gen, huh? I'd like to see it. CPUs already getting hammered on 1080p with current compression techniques.
