Converting Video For PS3

Post by lisalover1 »

I've been trying to convert a few videos to run on my PS3, as I'm trying to get a bunch of HD videos onto it, and have it play whatever my Xbox/XBMC can not. But, I'm running into some serious roadblocks. Mainly that most movies are taking several hours, if not a whole day to convert, and when they finish, they cut out multiple audio tracks, something I need to keep in. I have tried all the common PS3 converters like Red Kawa's PS3 Video 9, etc., but they all take ages to convert a single movie. The closest I have come to success is with the official Divx converter, which at least recognizes the extra audio tracks, but gives me an error code when I start that seems to have no online documentation on what it means. Is there a fast video converter out there that works like it's supposed to?

I used to use a program called gotsent! Should still be around! Maybe it can solve your issues. I gave up ages ago converting movies because i couldnt stand the huge conversion times and also the probability of it not working in the end.

I solved it by making a PC just for movies attached to my 40" TV. Hey presto multimedia center for moi!

MKV2VOB is the standard for PS3 video conversion and a must if you're an Anime and movie fan. It preserves the original resolution, audio tracks and quality of the video to a tee. It even allows you to keep any subs the file may have and make them hard or soft on the output file! Plus, it's lightning fast taking only 45 minutes to convert a 1080p movie with 5.1 audio.

You can find MKV2VOB here:

Another option is PS3 Media Server. This allows your PS3 to just access your computer as if it were a media server. The upside is it will automatically convert any format to a PS3 compatible equivalent on the fly while also preserving subs and multiple audio tracks, 5.1 etc... and converts it all on the fly. The only downside to this is that conversion of extremely large/high bitrate files (like that 25GB perfect blu-ray rip of something we've all got lying around) will stutter during the conversion process given their massive size if your computer isn't beefy or at least up to spec. (Though I suspect the only reason my computer lagged behind at times is that it's a single core CPU from late '06 with only 3GB's of DDR1 RAM and a medium range HDD that could use a decent cleanup and defragging.)

You can find PS3 Media Server here:

^(Just grab the latest stable release, unless you like walking on the wild side)
