Are classical console RPGs the way of the past?

It seems like portables are the only ones getting old-school RPGs. And who knows if we will be seeing many more of them.
Great article here:

Well, classic RPGs are appealing less and less to older gamers. I used to go ga-ga over them, and while I still buy them I almost never complete them any longer. The level grind is just too much. It would be great if they could transform the classic RPG model into a more focused experience.

True dat. Classical RPGs are great but I don't have time for a "100 hour slog" as the author says; I don't have time for multi-hour boss battles. And even if I did, I hate to do those anyways. This is why the original FinalFantasy will and always be my favorite. It's short, not too short, but short enough that you can play through the whole thing without getting bored. Plus, I never had to purposly level up either.

pds/snatcher are my ideal story pace

I remember when Panzer Dragoon Saga first hit. The one knock on it was that it was only about 15 hours long. I laughed at that because that's about perfect for me. 15 hours of story driven entertainment with exciting battles I have to use my brain to win... perfect. If a game like that is truly amazing I can always play it again a few years later.

I felt the same way with Snatcher, I didn't care that it was only a 4-5 hour quest. The ride was fricking amazing and I'll take it again some day.

While I loved a game like Skies of Arcadia and finished it, I'll never play it again. Putting in Panzer Saga or Snatcher to me is like sitting down to watch the Star Wars Trilogy or Alien/Aliens on a rainy day. Except that I feel like I'm part of the story. Playing a 50 hour rpg, or especially playing it a second time seems like a waste the older I get.
