A question to those with 80gb backwards compatible PS3s

Post by miked »

Heres the deal. I took the bait and traded my PS3 into gamestop and got $200 store credit and bought an 80gb BC PS3 for $55 after my discounts. Not a bad deal...............

...........BUT after I bought it I found out that PS3 80gb (CECHE01) BC compatability is not all that great. At least thats what the internet says. Obviously and as usual the internet is outdated and I cant tell how bad this problem actually is. I already looked at the official sony compatibility list and its is apparently outdated too, speaking of things fixed in firmware 2.2. Have any of you guys had any outstanding problems with games making them unplayable?

If a game has slight slowdown or mild graphics glitches, I can stand these problems, but if the game is unplayable or wont boot at all, I have a problem. Let me know.

85% of games are officially compatible.

Only about 50%-60% are fully playable but the ones that don't work or have major issues are usually titles you couldn't care less about like Madden '01 or NBA '04.

Which model PS3 did you trade in?

Hypothetical anyways, with risk of YLOD limited milage its better to save PS3 strictly for PS3 games.
Use an older much cheaper non YLOD PS2 console for PS2 games.

A huge bonus of using PS2 for PS2 games is HDAvance/HSLoader capability.

Yes I understand you worry about the YLOD, you only mention it every chance you get. Luckily this isnt part of this thread.

So......any games that wont play on my 80Gb PS3?

Sony site search for PS2 compatibility.

Should look into that HDAdvance/HDLoader though.

CRT gamer, why not just put the YLOD warning thing in your sig or something?

Anyhow, the reason those lists seem "outdated" is because Sony hasn't updated the b/c on the ps3 (ps1 or ps2) in quite a long time.

 Yeah man, I mean I understand being protective of your systems and all, but they're designed to be played not babied.

Also, maybe he wants to use it as an upscaler/upconverter for his PS1/PS2 games and compared to the other options out there (COUGH-xrgb-Cough) it's the only easy and affordable solution.

Apologies, not trying to offend Current Gen owners, just offering help. Great exclusive games are to be had on any console be it old or new. The cold hard reality is the PS3 and 360 has a track record of a chance eventual fail due to heating issues and OSHA required LEAD FREE SOLDER. So why would anyone waste milage of PS3 playing an older game with that risk hanging? Real ironic for YLOD to appear playing a PS1-PS2 game when older consoles are so inexpensive, especially if already sitting in the shelf. PS2 console scenario I pointed out earlier with HDAdvance/HDLoader a better convenient route anyways.

Any help offered even if seems redundant, doesn't have to be used. A casual new reader might gain. The information on Racketboy is not just for active members but for everyone to gain knowledge, maybe even encourage participation and add more rhetoric.
The problem affecting both consoles is that the LEAD free solder on the under side of the GPU (Graphics processing chip) is disconnecting, over time, from the main board. As the board of the console heats up when on, the solder joints expand. When you turn the console off the solder contracts. Factor in LEAD FREE solder on what are known as BGA (Ball Grid Array) connections to the main board and and the high operating temperature of both PS3 and Xbox360, then you have a recipe for disaster.

THERE IS NO PERMANENT FIX ON PS3 YELLOW LIGHT OF DEATH

The only way you could PERMANENTly fix the problem is to remove all the lead free solder from the underside of the GPU and replace it with Leaded-solder. This is not only prohibitively expensive to do, but it is also ILLEGAL under the 2006 European Union Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). So don't believe anyone promising a PERMANENT fix.

Interim, I added YLOD sticky to my signature.

Give it a rest man, we all know about the issues and stuff but honestly we're all here to actually play our games not baby everything like it's about to die. Especially when the issue is easily and cheaply fixed by any number of third party repair shops within the week.

As for the ROHS crap well you can get piles of leaded solder just about anywhere if you look in the right places if you really wanted a 100% permanent fix.

While your info and opinions are obviously well informed and intelligently written it can also come off in the wrong manner to those who actually want to play PS1 and PS2 games on their PS3 in fact it's 90% of what I do. Remember the PS3 is still the most affordable and practically only way to upscale all your PS1/PS2 games in the US for most people.

Plus not everyone has room for fifty boxes to be plugged into their TV at once it's just a convenience thing.

Yes im using it to upscale my games on my HDTV. I actually have a PS2 with freemcboot and hdloader etc. but the input lag was just too horrible on the HD and it looked like trash. Now everything looks a bit better and NO LAG. I tried quite a few games last night and they all seemed fine to me, so I hope I never run into any really nasty bugs.
