any reason i should buy the game gear

Post by mas »

So i went out and bought some of the game boy titles you guys recommended and i came across a few game gear games for a few bucks at a yard sale nothing rare just common titles. So now i need to pick up a game gear and after searching the net and ebay a really good one cost 30 or so dollars. Well since I have a gba sp and a bunch of gba and now gb and gbc games any reason why I should pick up a game gear? I had it once but my oldest brother took it from me when he went to the military in 91 so i only had it for a couple of weeks. Please give me some feedback about the game gear thanks.

If you have an ac adapter then get it if not don't
I put rocket fuel in my vaccuum and it started a fire in my house. I am so mad at Black & Decker for making a vaccuum that I can't do what I want with.

Yeah, an AC adaptor is essential, because the amount of batteries the GG uses is ridiculous, and the battery time is shite.

The best reason to own a Game Gear is, imho, GG Shinobi & GG Shinobi 2 - these are two of my all-time favourite Shinobi games and they're greatly underrated. Also, I remember enjoying the Sonic games, Sonic, Sonic 2 (which are both different from their Genesis/Megadrive counterparts), Sonic Chaos and Sonic Tripple Trouble.

Also, Super Space Invaders '91 is an absolutely amazing version of the arcade classic that you can only find on the GG and Master System (and Atari, Amstrad etc).

Yeah, I owned one back in the day and at the time, I really liked it. But looking back, there's no "must have" game that I know of. I enjoyed columns, sonic 1 and 2, hmm... yeah there really wasn't a lot. If you are trying to build a big handheld collect I think you have to try and get one. If you just want some really good portable game, I'm not so sure the Game Gear is where it's at.

And I totally agree on the battery issue. That thing tore through AA batteries. I bought some "battery grip accessory thing" that gave you a little more time but made the thing weigh in at probably 3 or 4 lbs.

I'm sorry but that statement just pisses me off so much.

The battery life USED to be shit in 1993 when AA batteries were laughably low powered when compared to modern contemporary AA's. I've gotten nearly three weeks of life out of my GG with constant play by using some energizer e2 lithium batteries that wal-mart had on sale and usually average about 1-2 weeks with regular energizer and duracells. Remember like all technology batteries are constantly evolving and becoming longer lasting in high drain stuff like old-school electronics and digital cameras.

Still though when using modern regular batteries the GameBoy still kicks the GG's ass with insane month long battery life, but it's something to think about.

^You know I've never thought about that before, but you're probably right. And if what you say is true, that's pretty sweet.

Yeah I had a Game Gear once, for a day lol. I changed my mind and took it back to the shop the next day. The brightness control on it was bust anyways, which is partly why I took it back. I used to love the GG though. Whilst I didn't own one myself, I used to borrow a mate's when I was a kid and I absolutely loved the thing.

The best feature of the Game Gear is that you can play Sega Master System games on it! This is was made easily possible because the Game Gear was essentially just a portable SMS handheld to begin with. But stupid Sega, they never pushed that feature well enough so a lot of people didn't know about it and they just ended up looking at the lackluster Game Gear library and scoffed. But had Sega just packed in the adapter with the system to begin with and actually glamorized that feature as part of their marketing strategy then they most likely would have sold a helluva lot more units, even despite the initial high price of the Game Gear.

But anyway...

Look for a "Master Gear" or "Gear Master" converter. They're the same thing, just different manufacturers. And the former was later licensed by Sega (when it was already too late  )

why not? it is an awesome and cheap handheld. It is a shame there is no "Game Gear Advance", because The game gear screen is terrible.

I have always wondered about the game gear, I went to the swap meet today and found one for $5 with no battery covers. I thought it might be easy to find some on eBay so I bought it. I also got a sealed copy of sonic 2 for $3 and copies of sonic 1,2 and sonic 3 for $6. Was this a good deal to start out with cause I don't know a lot about these things?
I thinks is some good fun, but is there any way to take out some of the scratches on the screen?

Yeah, that is a good deal, and to get rid of the scratches on the screen, you must take the system apart, and replace the screen cover.
