Sword of the Berserk ~ Problem

Post by joehero »

First off, I love the game! I gave myself the day off, and decided I was going to play it. The action and the strory line is great. After many hours into it I got to a point that the game continues to lock up on me. Its soon after the nun throws herself into the fire. Then I have to fight Zodd the Immortal, I beat him and continue on. Here's the video on youtube, at 7:11 he goes through the door, and thats where it locks up on me. It is a downloaded and burned copy. I have tried different media, different downloads from different sites. But nothing seems to work, it locks up everytime right there. Any ideas? Is there a way to download a save file that just beyond there, and upload it to the vmu via cd-r? Thanks!

If you have a way to transfer save files from your DC to your PC (Nexus memory card is probably the cheapest/easiest way), then you can try it out on an emulator, and use the original GDI for testing. If you experience the same problem with the GDI, then it was most likely a bad rip of the game. If you experience something different, perhaps the emulator doesn't support that game.

If you don't have a way to transfer files, then yes, you might want to look for save game files through Dream Explorer (SB image here). Unfortunately, I am not on a computer where I can test what all is on that image, so I am not sure if you will find a save that you can test with.

If you have already tried different downloads, all with the exact same behavior, my bet is that the original GDI is bad. If you can find someone who can rip a new version, that might be your only bet. I ran into the same problem with Dragonriders for DC. The original rip was bad, and therefore, all subsequent images made from it were bad.

Sorry that won't help you out much, but hopefully it answered a few questions you might have had.

Good luck

Does it lock up for you with the actual non-backup game disc?

With all the time invested in this game why not buy an original?
10 bucks used at Amazon.

I used to download savegames from the web using Planetweb 3.0, but the catch of course is to dial-up into an ISP. Perhaps that would be less of a hassle than ordering one of the Dreamcast transfer cables.

I tried setting this up through Windows XP and Windows 98, and I had no luck. To be honest, after the time I spent screwing around with it, it was worth the 20 bucks I spent on the Nexus card/cable.

To the others suggesting buying the game, that's great and all, but for the community of people who burn the games, him buying a disc won't solve their problem. Not to get into a debate about pirating, but if a new image can be made, that will solve everyone's (meaning those willing to burn the game) problem, as opposed to one person's problem.

Not really ethics of piracy issue on my end since its outta print. Just more of a solution considering hours invested in game. Seems with that much gameplay involved, the 10 bucks for an original is easily worthy over possible later level CDR lockups.

Who is the release group on the rip you've got? DCRES has released a copy of this. If you're on underground-gamer you can find it without a problem. You could probably find a direct link somewhere on google if you just search for the right things, too. (Try checking out snesorama, or just search "DCRES" and "Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage")

Here are some of the cliff notes on the DCRES release.

Features :
- Not corrupted files at all, it was made with GD dump files.
- Dummied for 700mb CDs.
- Used custom file order.
- Selfboot.
- Used custom DCRES optimization techniques. It means faster loadings and less Dreamcast reader noise.

About the game:
- It has VGA Box support.
