Original Xbox 480p
You know, the Xbox looks pretty amazing in 480p, especially considering it came out about 9 years or so ago. I like how it renders the picture fully regardless of overscan problems on old TV's so on my LCD it fills up the entire screen. The fact that most games support widescreen HD sets is pretty cool too. Sure you can see differences in texture and shadow detail, but most original Xbox games still look pretty damn good. Plus, Outrun 2006 is just beautiful anyway, but with the component cables it really shines.
Older. Not wiser.
Re: Original Xbox 480p
I got component cables for my xbox not that long ago, and Outrun was the first game I played. it does look beautiful. It's a shame that there were more games that supported 480p and widescreen on the system, the ones that do still look very good.
Edit: my bad, i meant to type 720p. only a handful of good xbox games support it. But they look real good.

Re: Original Xbox 480p
Don't all Xbox games also support 5.1 surround sound?

Re: Original Xbox 480p
There are several games that even support 720p, and even a handful that support 1080i; in which case, they look at least on par with some current-gen games.

Re: Original Xbox 480p
It's somewhere in the 90% range of games that support Dolby 5.1.
Here's a full list of games that support 480p and higher resolutions:
http://www.hdtvpub.com/productdb/games/ ... earched=do
Be aware that the above list does have a few inaccuracies from time to time such as how it lists JSRF as sans Dolby 5.1 when it fetures the Dolby Digital logo at the game's startup and my receiver switches over to Dolby Digital 5.1 mode when I start the game.
Also, here's how to get the Original Xbox's Dashboard to display in 480p as copypasta'd to notepad from a site I saw it on ages ago:

EDIT!: The above guide will work with probably 90% of all Xboxes currently out there despite Original Xbox Live being dead. If your Xbox has an older version of the dash just find a game from 2006-2007 that's Live compatible and it will automatically install the update onto your Xbox off of the disc itself. That site I copied this from wrote:The 480p dashboard requires an update from Xbox LIVE.
If you do not have online account, some LIVE games will install the update for you.
The Xbox dashboard displays at 480i by default.
You can enable 480p by holding both the left and right triggers and clicking the left and right analog sticks.
This must be done while you are in the Xbox dashboard.
Your Xbox must be hooked up to an HDTV (or EDTV) with component cables for this to work.
Do not try this on a normal TV set.
The "floating" dashboard:
While in the main dashboard screen hold X+Y.
This will make your dashboard windows "float" and move about slowly.
This can be good for those worried about burn-in.

Re: Original Xbox 480p
The biggest difference between Xbox original games and current gen games is the "shinyness". Very few original Xbox games have that, the only one I can think of at the moment would be Burnout 3.

Yeah, I hate that glittery silver sort of sheen that everything is coated in, damn AA and AF.darthmunky wrote:The biggest difference between Xbox original games and current gen games is the "shinyness". You mean specular and bloom lighting.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Yeah, I hate that glittery silver sort of sheen that everything is coated in, damn AA and AF.darthmunky wrote:The biggest difference between Xbox original games and current gen games is the "shinyness". Re: Original Xbox 480p
Potato/potahto it's all crap to me. Also, bloom lighting can be done without that stupid silvery sheen everyone's addicted to as evidenced by most PS2, OG Xbox and even PS1 (Ridge Racer Type 4 anybody?) games. Most developers just choose not to put the extra mantime into it anymore or say "Well we'll come back and fix it in the patch." but never do.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:You mean specular and bloom lighting.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Yeah, I hate that glittery silver sort of sheen that everything is coated in, damn AA and AF.darthmunky wrote:The biggest difference between Xbox original games and current gen games is the "shinyness". Plus it's an easy way for dicks to criticize games, everybody's a photographic expert or professional cinematographer when the image onscreen looks like it was shot on a five dollar camera by a four year old facing the sun.

No, it's like tomato/potato. Anti Aliasing gets rid of aliasing (or "teh jaggies") through supersampling. Anisotropic Filtering enhances textures at oblique angles.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: Potato/potahto it's all crap to me.
(Yes, I know these are simplistic definitions.)
What you refer to as a "silver sheen" is a bad implementation of Bloom Lighting.
Eh, it doesn't matter most console games look like shit (to me) anyway.
