Found my 1st Dreamcast!!!

Post by Nickaroni »

Hi out there, I was cleaning out a bunch of stuff because I'm moving, and I came across the Dreamcast I pre ordered back in 1999. Its still in awesome shape, and I still have all of the accessories that I had come across. I was doing some research over the past two days, and there's still a pretty decent following of this system. I knew when I first bought it, it was before its time. I use to play online with 56k back in the day, and the role that Microsoft played in the system. The questions I have, I have a broadband adapter, and I can't seem to get it to work. Also is there any reason to get online with it anymore. I doubt that SegaNet is still even up? Also I'm having some issues with the Sega VGA Adapter as well, I paid a pretty penny for this thing to play on my 23 inch CRT, LOL! Most of my games are gone, but I came across sites that most games are available bootleg now, and what is meant by homebrew games?

Thanks for any help anyone out there can provide.

What kind of issues are you having with the VGA cable? In case you don't know, certain games need to be patched to run in VGA mode, and some additional ones (very few, really) won't run in VGA at all.

Dreamcast homebrews are just games made by fans to run on a DC.

As for your broadband adapter, I've never had one, but maybe it doesn't assign automatic settings when you connect to a network. Have you tried manually adjusting the configuration to match that of your router?

The broadband adapter is still very useful, and is even currently a valuable collector's item! You can still play Phantasy Star Online and Quake III Arena online via a BBA, but for the former, you need to download a special version of the game that will automatically connect to a private server. Here's a list of all the DC games still online:

If you're having trouble with accessories, if the items in question have been sitting in storage for a while, the first thing to try is cleaning them. It's a simplistic approach, but you'd be surprised how often it works. Try cleaning the BBA's connector, and the DC's slot for the BBA, and try it again. Also, another thing that may help is that sometimes the DC needs to be plugged in directly to the router with a single Ethernet cable [by which I mean no network hub adapters].

If you decide not to use the broadband adapter, be sure to sell it and let another collector have a good time with it.

If you are feeling nostalgic (or don't have a newer console), playing online is great. I think there is a "get together" where people play Quake III online on Fridays.
